The Office
19 people recommended this item
Description
I started watching the BBC version of The Office. It took me a while, but I finally really got into it. I was worried the American version of The Office might be as bad as the American version of Couplings, but it turned out to be even better than the BBC version. Be sure you're buying the version you are looking for.

Firefly

Description
Another Joss Whedon gem-this one tragically short-lived. With an incredible cast (nobly led by the adorably charming Nathan Fillion), after you finish the season you'll be left wanting more. And luckily, you can have it with the follow up major motion picture, Serenity.

Battlestar Galactica - Season One (2004)

Description
One of the best science fiction shows on TV. Right up there with the first dozen seasons of Stargate SG-1, but Battlestar Galactica is a bit grittier and less frolicky.

The Shield

Description
Yeah, it's another cop show. But this one has excellent action, drama, and at times goes over the top with some scenes that are somewhat shocking. I would say that the characters have multi-dimensional aspects but that sounds dry and boring which The Shield is anything but.

LOST (Complete First Season)

Description
I have a love/hate relationship with Lost...Most of the time I can't believe how incredibly good it is, sometimes I find it entirely frustrating. But it's always engaging and I still eagerly tune in every week.

Stargate SG-1

Description
Stargate SG-1 is one of those incredbly successful phenomenons in a subset of the population where the rest of the population has absolutely no idea it's going on. Well written, well directed, well acted, and pretty good effects that get better with the seasons as the budget grows. If you start watching this on DVD and find you like Stargate SG-1, you will have years of enjoyable shows ahead of you. There are that many episodes: http://sg1-episodes.notlong.com

"Freaks and Geeks" (1999)

Description
Even though Judd Apatow has moved on to far bigger, though arguably better projects (40 Year Old Virgin, Knocked Up, etc.), FREAKS & GEEKS is still my favorite. Be prepared to race through all 19 episodes, so make sure you have the time set aside before you purchase.

Wow. Set aside a couple days to watch this entire miniseries. I was blown away by the quality of this HBO production. Make sure you have a great home theater with high quality audio (cranked up). You really feel like you are witnessing World War II.

The Sopranos
4 people recommended this item
Description
The first season of Sopranos was groundbreaking TV. I continued watching other seasons because I kept hoping that they would live up to the name, but I started to lose interest. Fortunately, for them, their seasons got shorter and shorter so I probably saw most of the episodes anyway.
Definitely watch the first season if you missed it, but if you'd want more quality TV with extreme violence, you might switch to The Shield (FX) or Street Time (Showtime, but not yet on DVD).

Ok, I understand you will never trust another recommendation of mine because of this one but I have to do it... Attractive cops chase down attractive criminals in Florida. Enough action and romance for her to enjoy; enough action and gratuitous... um... romance for him to not get bored. Whatever happened to this (admittedly cheesy) show?
