Canadian Living : Just say spahhh: Spa do's and don'ts for pregnant women
First to recommend
Description
A spa visit may be just what the doctor or midwife (or your best girlfriend) ordered as a clue for the "I'll be pregnant forever" blues. Here are some tips on which spa treatments are -- and aren't -- recommended for moms-to-be.

Description
This is a collection of eight half hour audio programs in a 4-CD set. Each CD is packaged with a booklet containing descriptions of the shows and performers, written and illustrated by host and producer Nanci Olesen. You can buy a single volume or the whole set. (Naturally, more is better!) I'm one of the women featured on the first CD (the one about pregnancy and newborn shock). Nanci and I talk about the ups and downs of each of the three trimesters.

Birth The Play :: The Play :: About the Play
First to recommend
Description
I had the opportunity to see a special performance of this play during the DONA International (formerly Doulas of North America) conference in Washington, DC, in 2005. I'll never forget the powerful mantra that one of the characters delivered after recounting her childbirth experiences: "My body rocks."
Check out the website to learn more about the play and how you can bring it to your community on Labor Day 2007.

Doulas

Description
Doulas are a laboring (or new mother's) best friend. This page from the DONA International website makes the case for doula care. As the website points out, a growing body of research shows that the use of a doula has clear benefits for families during childbirth and postpartum, with no known risks. Momnipotent: Songs for Weary Parents
First to recommend
Description
If you've read my book The Mother of All Parenting Books, you know that I adore one of the tracks on Momnipotent -- the song called "Mommas Have a Secret." (Nancy White -- the singer/songwriter who wrote and performed all the songs on this amazing album gave me permission to reprint an excerpt of the lyrics in the first chapter of my book.) I was thrilled when Nancy agreed. The song talks about how it's impossible to explain motherlove to someone who doesn't have a child, so we tend to brush over the really great stuff -- the stuff that practically defies description anyway. I have purchased and given away tons of copies of this CD over the years because it captures the early years of motherhood so well: the exhaustion, the crazy-making moments, and the hilarious bits, too.

Brain,Child - The Magazine for Thinking Mothers
First to recommend
Description
As the name implies, Brain, Child is the magazine for thinking moms -- or, rather, moms who want a magazine that makes them think. You won't find articles promising you 10 easy ways to solve your baby's sleep problems tonight or 12 ways to get your veggie phobic child to love rutabaga or any other article that might show up in any other number of mainstream magazines. Instead, you can expect motherhood, straight up. And that's deliciously refreshing.

Literary Mama: a literary magazine for the maternally inclined
First to recommend
Description
LiteraryMama provides a unique home to writing that is both "literary" and "mama." As the site's guidelines note, "While plenty of other online literary magazines and journals publish writing like this, none devote themselves exclusively to writing about motherhood. And while there are other motherhood-centered sites that publish some fantastic writing, they tend to stick to shorter, non-fiction pieces. At Literary Mama, writers explore ideas and emotions that may be outside the usual scope of commercial writing." The result is consistently thought-provoking writing by mother writers that delves below the surface of motherhood.
The site publishes fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction, literary criticism, book reviews, columns, and profiles about mother writers.
Also not to be missed -- Literary Mama's blog, which features Jennifer Lawrence (MUBAR). (via Mother Shock)

Mom-Invented Favorites
First to recommend
Description
BabyCenter.com and Good Morning America recently teamed up to track down the Mothers of Invention -- those moms who had, by necessity, designed products that had not yet been invented (but that the Mom World was crying out for). You can check out the result at BabyCenter.com -- and shop for these one-of-a-kind products at the very same time.
