The Best of Radiohead
2 people recommended this item
Description
A "best of" Radiohead collection is annoying on multiple levels, not least of which is the fact that Radiohead doesn't do stuff like this. That said, the song selection is arguably awesome (no matter how many times you've heard "Creep"). Everyone will have gripes (where's "Subterranean Homesick Alien?" I'll ask), but what are you going to do. The Special Edition collects 13 non-LP tracks.

Just: Radiohead
First to recommend
Description
A sufficient point of entry for what has become understood as the Radiohead Sound, Just blends the band's brand of crunching, arena rock--still harboring elements of the post-Nirvana sound of Pablo Honey--with boldly stated ambitions toward art rock. A great place to begin an understanding of this band.

Paranoid Android
First to recommend
Description
OK Computer's first single, Paranoid Android addresses the techno-alienation themes present throughout the album, referencing in its title a robot from The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. The band's movement from straight-ahead arena rock to moody art rock couldn't have been stated better.

Karma Police

Description
A seemingly odd choice for a potential radio hit, this was the second single from OK Computer. An instant fan-favorite, however, Karma Police would go on to be the second most popular song of Radiohead's career.

Creep

Description
The only inclusion here from the band's debut, Pablo Honey, this is the track that Radiohead wants to forget about more than any other (see Meeting People is Easy for confirmation). Nonetheless, this is how most people came into contact with the band, and it would be a pretty weird exclusion from any best-of collection.

No Surprises

Description
Continuing the understated theme of OK Computer's radio offerings, No Surprises was the album's third single. If nothing else, the song struck a chord with a lot of mopey teenagers and cemented Radiohead's new claim to art rock.

High And Dry
First to recommend
Description
While not nearly as moody or as morose as Radiohead would become, High and Dry marks an early flirtation with the somber. One of the band's earliest and most memorable ballads, this track is a tentative step into a space that is still being explored.

My Iron Lung
First to recommend
Description
Both a musical and lyrical transition for Radiohead between Pablo Honey and the new exploratory sound first addressed with The Bends, My Iron Lung sounds like a bridge between styles. Equally as straightforward as songs from the debut as it is moody and arty, this track marks a band in evolution.

There, There
First to recommend
Description
The first single off of Radiohead's feverishly anticipated follow-up to Amnesiac, this track, much like the album as a whole, marks something of a return to the arena rock form for the band. Reaching #4 in the UK singles charts, this was one of the more popular Radiohead tracks in recent years.

Lucky

Description
Something of an odd inclusion, Lucky reflects this collection's rendering of OK Computer as way more a subdued album than it actually is. No wonder people think Radiohead is for sad people.
