About this list:
Some obvious, some requiring a second thought - things I like with a naughty edge.
This is:
Moneybrother - To Die Alone

Description
I am a sucker for anything that sounds old but new at the same time, and Sweden's Moneybrother's second album is just that. He sounds a lot like Bruce Springsteen, writes dramatic, mini-epic songs and has created a near-perfect new classic with To Die Alone. (via moneybrother.net)

The Charlatans UK - Forever: The Singles
First to recommend
Description
While their peers have peaked and sputtered out or imploded, The Charlatans are still going strong after nearly 20 years recording. They're a band that has outlasted both the media's expectations and their peers, surviving the shoe-gazing, baggy Madchester scene, adding their retro-retro sound to the explosion of Brit Pop in the mid-90s and continuing to release startlingly good albums just as recently as the summer of 2006.
They've just released a collection of their singles and just a single listen brings back so many memories. The mix of Stonesy blues-based rock, swirling Psychedelic organs and dance-oriented rhythms has always sounded so familiar yet somehow new at the same time.
They're as bloody great as ever and thank goodness for that! (via thecharlatans.net)

Description
Forget for a moment the addictive cleverness of their videos and just listen. Tongues firmly planted in cheek, OKGo makes irresistibly catchy, close-to-perfection, totally danceable pop rock.
It's futile to resist.

Nouvelle Vague - Bande a Part

Description
To be honest, I'd never listened that closely to the lyrics of "Sweet and Tender Hooligans" or "Blue Monday" before hearing Nouvelle Vague's swanky Bossa Nova versions of them! Now I'm addicted. (via nouvellesvagues.com)

Paul Weller - Hit Parade
First to recommend
Description
It combines the jangly punk of The Jam, the sophisti-pop intellectualism of The Style Council, and the effortless soulfulness of Paul Weller's solo work. He's a masterful songwriter, an unbelievable musican, has one of the most compelling voices you'll ever hear and at the age of 48 is still the absolute epitome of cool. I know you've danced to A Town Called Malice in your underwear before (just like me) and he'll move you again it you let him! (via paulweller.com)

Amy Winehouse - Back to Black
20 people recommended this item
Description
I must admit I'm not one to stay on top of the pop music scene, but one album I did invest in this year was Amy Winehouse's Back to Black. We've all seen this tabloid queen in action this year, but if you haven't given her Grammy-nominated album a listen, you're missing out. Her soulful voice transports you back to a time when music was about someone's voice and not computers. It's no surprise she's also nominated for Best New Artist.
This album also features the nominated Record of the Year Rehab - whether she's in or out of treatment, I hope she wins a Grammy this year.
Update: 5 Grammy's for Ms. Winehouse! Don't stay in rehab too long, we need you.
