I highly recommend having a portfolio that will not only set you apart from others but one that will also speak for where you want to go.
Having printed media of your work will allow you to show off your skills but also what you love to do.
I have a Pina Zangaro that is more of a briefcase style portfolio but I feel these are a bit more portable than mine....

Every photographer should have a journal. You need a place to keep your ideas and thoughts. This would be it. Write in it about your ideas for the next shoot or write about your feelings...no matter what you do...write. It will allow you to express what you need to with your camera later.
But def. an essential to a person who is an artist.

You can't buy good denim for under 100 dollars now... thats unfortunate. I use to buy 501's and now I can't even do that.
