"For~Play": Party Props & Essential Event Decor - a list by tatorandtots

About this list:

Don't make the mistake of rushing through 1st, 2nd and 3rd base on your Party Prep To Do List. You may get lucky and still score but no one will go home as satisfied as if you'd put a little time and creativity into it. Throwing a spectacular soiree- whether for 2 or 200- is a lot easier and more cost-effective than you might imagine. Really, it's not hard. (...she writes, giving herself little kisses for sneaking in a naughty pun.....) ~~ ~~ ~~Ready? Let's go.

Qualifications:

I've shamelessly done every type of event to come my way.

Ministry of Sound Radio

Description

I know, you're already a trendsetter. As am I darling, as am I.

Ok maybe 'not so much' when it comes to me. I was, after all, recently spotted making the dreaded "rock on" hand signal while failing entirely to find the beat on the dance floor. Sigh. I can't cover ALL the bases ALL of the time.

Fine. The truth.

"Hello, my name is Fiona and I can't dance. Well, except the jig."
So I'm focusing my expertise on keeping up with the musicians since the beat gave me the finger and ran away years ago. I use Ministry of Sound's 24/7 radio not only for personal enterainment but also as musical Cliff Notes to see what's up and who's up and coming. And, it could be said, to hear the songs I will NOT be dancing to.

Shh.. don't tell anyone I'm really not that cool. Well except for the people who saw me dancing. They already know that.

Description

I've been collecting these over the years because they're great at pulling off the whole double-duty decor/function role. They're a lovely size for the hand and can make an appearance from you juice at breakfast to wine in the evening to tea on your bedside table at night. Or as votives, of course.

Elegant tea glasses in carefully selected colors and decorated with Arabesque design.

* 6 tea glasses prepacked in a suitable gift box
* Carefully hand picked three colors and designs
* Measures 3.75" high x 2.5" wide

These guys have built a fantastic online record label that sources some simply awesome dance music. I think their electronica, trance, and deep house artists are especially strong. I highly recommend you subscribe to the podcast as it will give you a good smapler of what they offer and you can then click-thru to buy the tracks.

I love listening to this stuff when I am grinding out an enduro work-out, whether that be running, biking, at the climbing wall. Also good for keeping my energy and focus when working and I need to be in my own world to concentrate

Teak Opium Bed

First to recommend

Description

I have a commercial building I've been renovating and have used it as event space here and there over time. On one of the floors, I tossed in a Moroccan lounge, mainly because the yards and yards of sari fabric I had hanging around covered the unfinished walls so easily. Thank god for staple guns. Whoo hoo staple guns.

Also in that room? A couple of opium beds, a Chinese marriage bed and even- ready for it?- a rickshaw. I have a great guy, Eli, who owns ArtAsia in Milwaukee (see separate rec) and he brings several shipments a year back from his travels to his shop.

With that said, the price of the beds at this online store is just about the best I've seen. Checking Ebay just now, I found a similar style for $300 more.

These bed make fabulously flexible and customizable options for seating in your den, at an event, in the yard....in fact, they're one of my favorite things.

We've all seen these, we can all figure out creative ways to utilize the but is it my imagination or is the color of this one particularly lush and inviting? I think I just may need to add one more to the pile......

ps also love that unlike my Target ones, this one is authentic.

Yes I do own these. No I don't want to talk about why. Yes I have used them. No I don't want to say how.

I will, however, say that they come in handy at the most unusual times and also make a great topper for a present.

Let's not discuss this again please. I'm a little embarassed.

Brace yourself to waste yourself. Your time anyway.. but SO worth it. This is one of my favorite sites to procrastinate on. I also print these up and use them for various decor things at events. An absolutely perfect site.

FREE ONLINE INSPIRATION!

BizBash is an event planners' magazine with individual online editions covering all major cities in the US.

Their showcases of all the big events and small fabulous parties from coast-to-coast has long been one of my top sources for free ideas and inspiration for both party planning AND home decor and design. They show so many amazing and innovative things that can be replicated easily and cheaply for your own applications AND have a great searchable resource/supplier link as well. Or order their venue catalog for reference.

Really, really great site. Play around in here for awhile and you will find things that make your next backyard party or major fundraiser rock.

Some quick examples- I got a great idea from a NY city party they featured- put game boards (like Monopoly) on acrylic service trays and use hors d'oeuvres as playing piecces. Or serve egg rolls stacked in cigar boxes. And I once snagged a tip from a picture they had to use at a Studio 54-themed event- order edible holographic glitter from a bakery supply site and roll round appetizers (like crab balls or cheesecake bites) in it. Serve on a mirror. They look just like mini disco balls.

See? I told ya you'd like it.
