Description

This heat shield doesn't make my Dell laptop run any cooler, but it does an excellent job of protecting my legs from being scorched. Plus it's way thinner than the (popular) Belkin CushTop and can even squeeze into my laptop carrying case.

UltraFire C3 Cree Flashlight

First to recommend

Description

This is a powerful little pocket flashlight which uses a single AA battery. If you haven't tested the latest generation of LED torches, you have no idea how bright these things are getting. This one is an especially great introduction given how cheap it is. I paid $13 with free shipping from dealextreme.com and it is almost as bright as my $60 Fenix pocket LED flashlight.

Squeezebox

27 people recommended this item

Description

I loved my original SliMP3, the predecesor to the squeezebox. From all accounts, Slim Devices has only made things better in the following generations. Though I passed on my SliMP3, I am seriously tempted to pick up a new Squeezebox, especially with all of the streaming Internet radio it supports in addition to listening to your MP3 collection on your Linux box.

Luxeon V 5-Watt LED Aluminum Hand Torch

First to recommend

Description

[UPDATE: Flashlight technology has made dramatic progress since this review was originally written. You can get better, cheaper LED torches today.]

Blinding white light (120 lumens) in a compact hand-held torch. If you're going to spend over $100 on a small flashlight, this is it. Warning: They claim the LED bulb can't be broken if you drop it, but I dropped it on concrete and *something* broke. If you're going to spend over $100 on a flashlight, don't drop it.

Leatherman Squirt S4

First to recommend

4 people recommended this item

Description

Fits in your pocket as easily as the Leatherman Micra but most of the tools are accessible on the sides without unfolding the whole thing. Plus it comes in different colors.

Look at the model when buying as the S4 has scissor and the P4 has pliers.

TiVo Series3 HD

First to recommend

3 people recommended this item

Description

I've been a loyal TiVo owner since 1999. I refused to upgrade to HD TV until TiVo came out with an HD unit. Today, my excuses have run out with TiVo's release of TiVo Series3 HD.

Now, I have to buy an HD TiVo, an HD television, upgrade my cable service to HD, and consider an HD receiver for switching video sources. There's no other option, right?

Bonus: If you already have lifetime subscription TiVo unit, use this link: tivo.com/vip

Vornado FA1-0007-06 Zippi Desk Fan

First to recommend

2 people recommended this item

Description

In another pick I described why the Vornado room fans are great. I recently purchased a Vornado desktop fan (the Zippi) and can now recommend it, too. It doesn't move air across the room, but aim it at yourself from just behind your keyboard and you'll feel a pleasant breeze all day long.

Razer Pro v1.6 Mouse

First to recommend

2 people recommended this item

Description

Billed as a gaming mouse but makes my programming easier, too.

This high performance mouse is extremely sensitive and accurate and I no longer get frustrated trying to get my Dell optical mouse to move the cursor to the right place on the screen.

If I set the Razer mouse to the highest accelleration (under Linux), I can accurately get the cursor to any spot on my 3200x1200 screen (2 displays) by physically moving the mouse less than an inch. Though I don't work in that mode, it shows how accurately the mouse senses movement across a surface.

Warning: It claims to have 7 buttons, but numbers 4-7 are absurdly placed and you should not expect to use them. (via Woot)

NukAlert Radiation Monitor and Alarm

First to recommend

Description

The hype about potential dirty bomb threats has died down a bit, but for about $150 you can still own this nifty gadget that detects radiation and alerts you to the approximate danger level. How cool is that?

I was trying to figure out how to test this device. I considered taking it up in an airplain which is where we are exposed to the most radiation in normal life, but then had second thoughts when I pictured trying to explain to the security fellows about the quietly ticking device with the nuclear symbol on it.

Note: Though the marketing material depicts this on a keyring, it's really too big to carry in your pocket all the time, and given the risks and likely stigma it would generate, it's probably not necessary. But as a gadget lover, it's pretty cool to own one.
