Stoned by by Andrew Loog Oldham

First to recommend

Description

A fun and and saucy read! If you don't know who by Andrew Loog Oldham is, he was the one who basically got Mick and Keef to start to write songs together and really drove the Rolling Stones to their first level of success. He is also an absolute outrageous and wonderful character. He is also currently a DJ in the morning on Little Steven's Underground Garage radio station on Sirius Sattelite Radio. I love listening to him. He tells really interesting stories. If you are in any way shape or form interested in early 60's British Rock, he has many tales to tell and was there to witness so much history in the making. He also plays great music. Get Stoned and be prepared to be entertained!

The Saints - (I'm) Stranded

First to recommend

Description

One of the best and most underated punk records of all time. If you like the Dead Boys, the first Clash CD and the Ramones, you are sure to love this CD. To me if you listen to it today, it sounds timeless. I love the title track, I'm Stranded. They also do a mean cover of River Deep Mountain High

Izzy Stradlin & the Ju Ju Hounds

First to recommend

Description

The smartest thing Izzy ever did was leave Guns and Roses (who died for me the day he left). He was the heart and fucking soul of GnR. Sure, Slash is a good guitarist, but his playing does not have the bluesy soul that Izzy's does. This is the first CD that Izzy did after leaving GnR. It still holds up to this day and just sounds amazing. Does Izzy love Keith Richards and the Faces? Sure he does!! Are those influences apparent on this disc? Sure they are, which is part of why I love it. It also doesn't hurt (and adds street cred) that Ian McLagan plays keyboards on this disc and Ronnie Wood himself takes up background vocals and guitar on Izzy's wonderful cover of his own Take a Look at The Guy. Izzy also does a great cover of Pressure Drop. Hell, the entire CD is great start to finish. Get this CD and see why I could really give a crap and why you shouldn't either when the much rumored new GnR (minus Izzy of course) CD Chinese Democracy comes out! ;-)

Nuggets: Original Artyfacts From the First Psychedelic Era 1965-1968

First to recommend

Description

This has some great awesome garage classics from the mid to late 60's. If you want to get a flavor of some of what is played on Little Steven's Underground Garage channel on Sirius Satellite Radio, this is the CD for you. The tracks were complied by long-time Patti Smith guitarist and garage rock aficionado, Lenny Kaye. I adore the entire CD. With that being said, a few of my fav. tracks are:

~ I Had Too Much To Dream (Last Night) - Electric Prunes
~ Dirty Water - Standells
~ Lies - Knickerbockers
~ Pushin' Too Hard - Seeds

Hanoi Rocks Box

First to recommend

Description

If you are in any way, shape or form a Hanoi fan you NEED to own this box set. Especially nice is the last disc, which contains solo stuff from all of the guys (the stuff by Nasty has been especially hard to find on its own so its a wonderful treat). Hanoi is/was one of my fav. bands of all time. They had the look, attitude and sound. Mike and Andy are like an updated Jagger and Richards! If you have never heard of Hanoi Rocks, get this box set and see what you are missing.

John Peel: Margrave of the Marshes

First to recommend

Description

Who is John Peel you ask? If you are a music junkie like myself I suspect you might already know the answer to that question. If you don't know who he is, read his wonderful story and find out. In brief, for those who are not familiar with him, John Peel was a champion of underground music of all kinds, especially punk and reggae. He had a radio show on BBC Radio 1 from 1967 until he passed too soon in 2004. I highly, highly recommend this book. If you are a fan of underground music, punk or reggae, whether you know it or not, you are in debt to some degree to John Peel. Read this book and discover a new friend, or rediscover an old one.

Big Star - 1 Record/Radio City

First to recommend

Description

One of the best power pop groups that ever was. I can't believe these guys were never commercially huge. However, just because they did not become popular does not mean they did not have a huge influence (the Replacements (their famous song Alex Chilton, is about Big Star's lead singer), Ryan Adams, etc.) This is their first and 2nd album back to back. Don't Lie to Me is one of my absolute favorites. If you have never heard Big Star pick up this CD and be prepared to enjoy a huge treat.

Butch Walker and the Let's-Go-Out Tonights - Rise & Fall of Butch Walker & The Let's-Go-Out-Tonites

Description

Butch Walker is one of my fav. songwriters on the planet. He has a very sarcastic and ironic style of writing lyrics. This is one of my top 10 CD's from last year (I put this along with Primal Scream's Riot City Blues on random in my CD player and have a glam fest). To me this sounds like Butch's ode to 70's glam rock. If you have never heard of Butch or if you are an old fan (and if that is the case you probably already own this) you are sure to love this CD.

Len Price 3 - Rent a Crowd

First to recommend

Description

I love British bands that actually sound British (Imagine if you will the amazing Mr. Paul Weller). If you cross the Who with the Clash and mix in the Kinks you will get an idea of what the Len Price 3 sound like! This is a really fun CD. I just got it and cannot stop playing it. Get this CD and see why these guys are the most relevant band around!

Music by women who are true Mavens (and a few who are new on the scene and appear to be up and coming Mavens, IMO).
