a guide to the practically obvious, with step-by-step instructions. recc'd by someone on lj, i am utterly amused by this. could be useful for folks w/ autism or other folks along the spectrum, as well as the extremely socially inept. i'm curious how using these instructions would work for someone - would it come out naturally, or is there still something lost between the acts and the actual meaning/intent?

"For putting an arm around someone's shoulder, the steps were 3 in number.
1. Extend arm out to one side from the shoulder.
2. Put arm over both shoulders of other person.
3. Lower arm and put hand on far shoulder.

i saw this years ago in a magazine and the images - a woman standing in a skirt of asparagus and a dark skinned man holding half an advocado, pit peeled and shining - have stuck in my brain to this very day. i haven't read the book, but based on the images alone i would love to have it. eroticism and cooking, what an excellent combo!

its the story of how following your dreams is a fabulous idea, damn the critics.

the main character is the pale awkward socially bizarre manboy we love, who dreams to be a ventriloquist. he's in love with his unemployment counselor. his parents are living in a dream world. his sister is a harpy. and his best friend is the punkrock screwup (formerly in Fifth Element) we all adore who learns to play klezmer music.

at every point the movie could take the safe way out or go totally cliche, it doesn't. it avoids being saccharine or over-the-top, but manages to be funny, cute and inspirational. plus, the lighting and imagery are fabulous.
