We ran a taste-test of four tonic waters: Two supermarket brands and two boutique tonics. The overall winner was the Fever Tree tonic, balancing sweet and bitter with welcome herbal notes. (via Tonic Tasting on MWD)

Chartreuse liqueur

2 people recommended this item

Description

With all of the things being called martinis nowadays, it's about time someone started bringing some class and quality back to flavoring vodka and gin. Think for a minute the next time you order an appletini or some such treacly concoction: you're going to mix premium vodka with some artificially flavored $7 sugary junk. Instead, try mixing in a splash of Green or the sweeter Yellow Chartreuse. It will make your drink look pretty, and it will taste so spectacular you won't even miss the garnish. The Carthusian monks have been making this liqueur since the early 17th century, and they got it right. Also, this liqueur is a good conversation starter; I mean, what else is made from 130 plants and herbs, from a secret recipe still guarded by only two living monks in the Alps?

Velvet Falernum

First to recommend

Description

Some recipes tell you you can substitute simple syrup, but you'd be missing out on the spicy, citrusy overtones that the real thing brings to drinks. It's a faintly alcoholic syrup scented with rum, cloves, almonds, and limes. (via Married... with dinner)

Luxardo Maraschino Liqueur

First to recommend

Description

It sounds like it's related to those fake-red cherries you get in bad manhattans, but this brandy-like liqueur is made from Italian Marasca cherries... and tastes like nuts and fruit. It's a key ingredient in classic cocktails like the Aviation and The Last Word.
