Summer's Almost Over :'( - Sept. Top 10 CDs - a list by Top-10-CD-List
Options for This Page
About this list:
Now that summer is almost over, things slow down a bit, kids are in school, not so much running around having fun, and overall it is just more mellow. Thus the reason that this month, my CD picks lean towards the quieter sounds of jazz. Enjoy these great CDs that are a little jazzier than your normal jazz.

Lauren Wood Music - "Love, Death & Customer Service"
First to recommend
Description
Lauren Wood who brought you “Fallen” from the film “Pretty Woman” and the hit duet with Michael McDonald “Please Don’t Leave”, comes Lauren Wood’s newest release – “Love, Death & Customer Service”. The list of collaborators on this record are pretty impressive with names like Melissa Manchester, Allee Willis (The Color Purple), Stephen Bishop and Little Feat’s Billy Payne
The Lead track “Contradictions” is a confiding track spotlighting her signature voice and her Smooth Jazz altos. I have to agree with Paul Zollo of American Songwriter magazine who writes “She’s a phenomenal vocalist, gifted songwriter and consummate producer. This new album is an apt response to those who complain that nobody writes songs like they used to.”
During her extraordinary career she has recorded with Frank Zappa and Michael McDonald and has written songs for everyone from Cher to Sammy Hagar to Gladys Knight, to adding her voice to the network theme for the TV Series “Just Shoot Me”- all of which points to her diversity as a musician and songwriter. The CD is so diverse, it goes from Pop to Jazz, to Adult Contemporary, to Funk and one song “Walk Towards the Light” (referring to the Love & Death in the title of the CD) even features a gospel choir!
“Sit back, put up your feet, close your eyes and enjoy.”
- Joe Montague, Jazz Review
“One of the most impressive pop arrivals in some time.”
- Robert Hilburn, Los Angeles Times
If you are a fan of Sarah McLaughlin, Norah Jones, Michael McDonald, Annie Lennox, Bill Champlin, Adele, Jason Mraz, Colbie Caillat or Duffy you are going to love this CD.
She’s giving away a free download with the single “Fallen” when you buy the CD which is pretty cool. Check out all the tracks and get the free download with purchase! by following the Buy Link. (via Lauren Wood Website)

Description
While this CD isn't even out yet (9/15/09), a friend turned me onto it and its well worth checking it out yourself! This guy is a wonderful jazz vocalist. Anyone who has seen him live in NY - well let's just say, its a performance you don't soon forget. If you like Michael Buble, Frank Sinatra, Peter Cincotti, Kurt Elling or Jamie Cullum you'll love this record.
After moving to New York, Vasandani quickly became a part of the jazz scene, and made a musical home in storied clubs like the Zinc Bar. He was also tapped for a number of guest performances and recordings, notably by the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis, Wycliffe Gordon, Eric Reed, T.S. Monk, and countless other peer and mentor musicians.
"My music always starts off with jazz, but can end up in any number of places because of all my different influences. I guess I value the freedom to explore as much as the discipline of tradition." –Sachal Vasandani
This is a must have record for any jazz collector! (via Mack Avenue)

Back to Basics: Christina Aguilera
First to recommend
Description
Simply put, "Back To Basics" is an INCREDIBLE album that brings Christina Aguilera's credit as an artist to a whole new dimension. The sounds on this album feel like authentic oldschool classics, but they have a unique modern touch. The songs are so organic and authentic to the point where you forget that its oldschool-inspired and just focus on the songs themselves. Christina Aguilera has transformed her image and musical style with every album. With the new Back to Basics album, her musical style has changed from the urban and light rock sounds of Stripped to a soulful and jazz-inspired album. Aguilera has described this album as a soul record combining elements of 1920s, '30s and '40s blues and jazz with modern day influences. Christina Aguilera is an incredibly talented young lady with a powerhouse voice, whose career will only continue to flourish for years to come. (via Amazon)

Fearless: Taylor Swift
First to recommend
Description
Those who thought Taylor Swift was a big deal after the release of her first record should be prepared: She's about to get way bigger. Although they're written by a teenager, Swift's songs have broad appeal, and therein lies the genius and accessibility of her second effort, "Fearless".
The insightful "Fifteen" ("In your life you'll do greater things than dating a boy on the football team") will connect with teens looking for hope and with adult women looking back, while the sparse "White Horse" will appeal to anyone who's experienced love lost, which is to say, everyone. "Hey Stephen" ("All those other girls, they're beautiful but would they write a song for you") displays Swift's confident sense of humor, and "Breathe" is a love-gone-wrong song suitable for women of all ages. Covers: James Taylor
First to recommend
Description
Covers is the cd that James Taylor fans have been anticipating for years. Recorded live with his full band in a barn in Massachusetts that was transformed into a studio, the album is a treasury of songs he has performed live over the years, but never recorded. It is an American songbook of tunes made famous by artists as varied Buddy Holly, The Dixie Chicks, The Temptations, Leonard Cohen, George Jones and Eddie Cochran, but embraced and interpreted by James Taylor in a way that makes each one his own. It is a significant work by one of the greatest artists of his generation, which pays tribute to classic American songs from Broadway to Nashville, Detroit to Memphis and across all boundaries. Covers is in itself a classic James Taylor recording. (via Amazon)

The Dana Owens Album: Queen Latifah
First to recommend
Description
Everyone grows up... even rappers. Pioneering female MC Queen Latifah shows a newfound level of maturity on The Dana Owens Album. A set of standards the rapper/actress decided to cover, the album features a host of jazz classics and R&B favorites.
Latifah is at her seductive best when playing the sultry siren on Al Green's "Simply Beautiful." With a little help from Green himself, Latifah's vocals slide over the warm, organ-drenched instrumental. The result is one that works today as well as it would have several years ago. Similarly, the big band-backed "Baby Get Lost" swings with bluesy groove that is pure nostalgia.
However, it's when Latifah mines more standard fare that the album seems to hita snag. Fans of James Moody's "Moody's Mood for Love" may want to skip Latifah's version, as it misses the subtle perfection of the original. Her rendition of "I Put a Spell On You" doesn't falter, but it's not impressive either. It ends up being the kind of performance that finds you constantly waiting for more but never getting it. The same can be said for her cover of the Mamas & the Papas' "California Dreamin'."
With this incredible album, this Queen is seemingly unforgettable. (via Amazon)

Speak Low: Boz Scaggs
First to recommend
Description
Speak Low his 17th. studio album; a follow-up to 2003's But Beautiful - "a sort of progressive, experimental effort ... along the lines of some of the ideas that Gil Evans explored" says Boz. Songs on the album include Chet Baker's "She Was Too Good To Be True," Johnny Mercer's "This Time the Dream's on Me," the often recorded "I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel to Be Free" and the Kurt Weill/Ogden Nash title track. "I'm a vocalist," Scaggs says. "I come more out of a blues/rhythm & blues background, but this is a different way of using my voice, and much more musically challenging and adventurous for me." Quiet Nights: Diana Krall
First to recommend
Description
Diana Krall's 12th album Quiet Nights is an intimate recording of ballads and bossa novas from the team that brought you her best-selling GRAMMY Award-winning CD The Look of Love. Accompanied by her quartet and orchestra, Diana turns her sensual vocals and consummate piano skills to "The Boy from Ipanema", "Walk on By"and other classic tunes. Quiet Nights is initially available as a limited edition CD including 2 bonus tracks - her stunning rendition of the Bee Gee's "How Can You Mend A Broken Heart" and the standard "Every Time We Say Goodbye". As on reviewer stated, "The iconic diva returns with a mixed bag", and she definitely is. (via Amazon)
