The Blue Lotus - The Adventures of Tintin

First to recommend

Description

In the world of comics, Tintin is the cool, worldly professor, while Superman is just a guy in a spandex suit.

While a few of the Tintin comics are connected (as in continued from one to the next) you can pick one up to read in any order and still get a good dose of fun.

The Blue Lotus is one of Herge's earlier works, and marks his entry into high-detail, period specific stories. The setting is 1931, when Japanese troops were occupying parts of the Chinese mainland, with Shanghai administered by the British and Americans as a neutral trading base for western nations.

Clearly, not your average comic book. Yet Tintin is highly readable by children; they each deilver great adventure and some cute comic effects. There is plenty of action, but no graphic violence. Most importantly, after reading a Tintin, they'll want to go and explore the world.
