Karl Pilkington - a list by designdude

About this list:
While difficult to fathom, the phenomenon of Karl Pilkington begins with the Ricky Gervais podcast series, for which he was a producer. The most downloaded podcast in history (Guinness-certified in 2006), this show featured Pilkington as an unwitting foil to hosts Ricky Gervais' and Steven Merchant's taunts and/or enchantment with his unorthodox world view. Gervais would become an increasingly vocal supporter of Pilkington, going so far as to refer to him as "the funniest man alive in Britain today."

I actually know who this guy is.

The Ricky Gervais Show
First to recommend
Description
Fans of the American hit sitcom The Office will have heard its British predecessor. The show's creators, and producers of the American office, are also the creative team behind the world's most popular podcast to date, which also features an absurd foil by the name of Karl Pilkington. This is where it all began.

Ricky Gervais Presents: The World of Karl Pilkington

Description
Sort of overkill for fans of the Ricky Gervais podcasts--not only the world's most popular podcast, but one of the more rewarding audio collections in circulation for repeat listening. A nice introduction, however, to the curiosity that is Karl Pilkington, complete with original illustrations by the subject.

Happyslapped by a Jellyfish

Description
A travel journal culled from the landscape of Karl Pilkington's psyche, this text is a nice edition for those left a little underwhelmed by his first book. If you're looking for the line where idiocy meets poetry, there's no better place to look.

"NERD" T-Shirt, by olechka

Description
The most lovable idiot of the '00s, perfectly contemporary in his podcast-fueled stardom, Karl Pilkington can occasionally inspire adoration amid he pile of abuse he receives. He's nowhere near this cute in real life.

Monkey News Tote Bag
First to recommend
Description
For the uninitiated, Karl Pilkington, a regular on Ricky Gervais' podcasts, drives a feature in each episode in which he retells a supposedly authentic and newsworthy story about a sub-human primate engaging the human world. Generally met with hysterical laughter, the occasional angry scream, and round dismissal as "complete bollocks," the features is a highlight of the each episode. And here's the commemorative tote bag.

Karl Pilkington Mug

Description
There may be no better excuse for launching into a difficult and arguably-fruitless explanation of the appeal of Karl Pilkington than an answering of the question "Who's that?" from someone eyeing your mug. If you're the type of person who likes to court that type of inquiry, here you go.

I Could Eat a Knob at Night
First to recommend
Description
What's actually behind the phrase "I could eat a knob at night" is worth exploring, but suffice it say that Karl Pilkington's habit of making unfortunate statements, coupled with Ricky Gervais' knack for ridiculing absurdity into global phenomena has never been more perfectly realized.

Karl Pilkington Crocheted Doll
First to recommend
Description
Although the average American has no idea (and probably wouldn't care) who Karl Pilkington is, young people crochet are more likely to understand his genius. A woman named Anne Frost has even gone to the trouble of handcrafting a tiny version of him. Not for sale, but easy on the eyes.

The Future of Karl Pilkington
First to recommend
Description
Kind of a great way to be introduced to the phenomenon of Karl Pilkington, this tee plays on the reality that no one in the US (beside hipsters coming in via Ricky Gervais) has any clue who Karl Pilkington is (including most of said hipsters), but big things will happen once they do. The absurd overstatement of his genius by Gervais is also well represented.

Loneliest Man in the World
First to recommend
Description
A bit misguided, this tote attempts to refer to Pilkington's suggestion that the guy who didn't get to exit the lunar module with "Buzz and Armstrong" to walk on the moon was the loneliest man ever...in the world." This image was probably pulled from a pic of someone standing on the moon. Just saying.
