First things first, now that you've decided to travel you get your passport. Keep in mind that based on your location it could take several weeks to months to get your passport. You can usually pay a little extra to have it expedited but the point is... don't purchase tickets or start making final travel plans until you have your documents in hand.

Once you've got your passport, you've got to keep tabs on it. Make sure you keep it somewhere safe and secure where you can always find it. Picking out a bright cover for it is another way to ensure you never misplace it (especially during transit)
