Wonderful Children's Books to Give - a list by debegray

About this list:

I grew up with a serious deficit of physical activity because I loved to read. Now I'm passing that love on to my son, who fortunately is better at balancing reading with running around. I believe there's nothing more valuable that you can give a child (besides your love) than a love of reading.

Qualifications:

Lifelong reader and mother of a wonderful son

Toot & Puddle: Top of the World

First to recommend

Description

This is one of our favorite books. Puddle, the homebody of the two loveable pigs Toot and Puddle, wakes up one morning to find that his restless, world traveling companion has gone out for a walk and not come back. Using his instincts, he tracks his friend down. Holly Hobbie's lovely watercolor illustrations contribute more to the book than the text, in my mind. A gentle story of loyalty and friendship.

Kiss Good Night picture book

Description

This is just the sweetest book, without being sappy. My son and I love to read it before bedtime. Mrs. Bear is getting Sam ready for bed and pretends that she's forgetting the one thing he's waiting for - his kiss goodnight.

Mama, Do You Love Me? picture book

The little Inuit girl in this book keeps testing her mother, presenting scenarios in which she's either disguised or has done something naughty, etc. Her mother responds that she would know her in any form, and love her no matter what.

Chester's Way

First to recommend

Description

Chester's Way is about two Felix Madison-ish little boy mice whose complacent friendship is shook up by Lilly, a girl mouse who is imaginative and outrageous. At first, the boys don't want anything to do with Lilly, but they change their minds when she saves the day for them.

This, as with all Kevin Henkes books, is as much fun for a parent to read as a child to hear.
