Seven Up / 7 Plus Seven

Description
First broadcast in 1964, this is an engrossing chronicle of the lives of 14 students from varied social backgrounds (in England), beginning when they were 7 years old. The first meeting with the group of wide-eyed, innocent children invites viewers to take a look at lives in the making; the follow-up film, 7 Plus Seven, checks in on them 7 years later.
The latest, 49 up, checks in on them at the age of 49. Fascinating stuff!

The life and career of Louis I. Kahn, one of the 20th century's most influential architects, as documented by his son. One weird thing about his life - he was a bigamist, with 2 families. Talk about a glutton for punishment!

Humane Society

Description
See what all the furor was about in this undercover video by a humane society investigator. This tape led to the criminal indictment of several workers and the largest beef recall in history. Unfortunately, most of the beef had already been eaten - by schoolchildren. This site has many videos, some happy, some not so much.

Thin
First to recommend
Description
A 6 month chronicle of the lives of 4 women undergoing treatment for anorexia. Oddly enough, all of the support personnel at the Florida center are obese and yet it's never directly said that they have an eating disorder, too. This documentary is fascinating, disturbing, in depth. Gives you an idea of how difficult it is for anorexics to win their battle for normalcy.

Helvetica - The Film
6 people recommended this item
Description
Who knew that a typeface could inspire such emotion? Helvetica was embraced by designers in the late 1950s, and many American corporations used it in their marketing. In the 60's and 70's, Helvetica became a symbol of corporate greed, government abuse of power and the Vietnam War. After seeing this documentary, you will look at signage differently. At some point, we need a documentary called "Trajan" which is almost exclusively the typeface of choice for movie titles and posters. The question is - how is it being used to manipulate our choices?
