The Office

19 people recommended this item

Description

The Office. Amazing. I guess which ever version you see is the version you end up being loyal to. I hate the US version, but that's because no one, I repeat NO ONE, can fill Ricky Gervais' role. He is a genius.

Sundance Documentary Collection: The Staircase

2 people recommended this item

Description

Did he do it? Or didn't he? Author Michael Peterson finds his wife dead at the bottom of the stairs. Next thing he knows, he's being tried for murder. The North Carolina prosecutors figure he MUST be guilty because he's bi-sexual. When it's revealed that a former neighbor in Germany also fell down the stairs & died, his lawyer looks right at the camera & says, "Your film just got a whole lot more interesting." Indeed. A gripping, fascinating, real life courtroom drama.

Into Thin Air: A Personal Account of the Mt. Everest Disaster: Jon Krakauer

First to recommend

Description

Absolutely gripping. This May 10th is the 12th anniversary of the disaster, which claimed 5 lives, including experienced guides. Krakauer, who was along to document what was supposed to be a routine climb, brilliantly captures the mis-steps along the way, the egos, the driven nature of Everest mountaineers. This is the audio version and it's compelling and intimate, and beautifully read by the author.

Les Paul - Chasing Sound

First to recommend

Description

The man invented the electric guitar and still plays brilliantly at 90. Features duets with: Keith Richards, Mary Ford, Steve Miller, B.B. King, & Merle Haggard, as well as interviews with many more. See Eddie Van Halen make an I'm Not Worthy speech! Also, some funky extras from the 40s and 50s - love the Listerine commercial! Oh, and he also invented multi-track recording. Think what music would be without electric guitar and multi-track! I think it must be very rare for a skilled musician to also have the kind of brain that invents. A real left brain / right brain mix in Les Paul.

Who Killed the Electric Car? (2006)

Description

GM killed its own creation, repossessing the cars from celebrity owners and crushing them. GM is the stupidest company. I hope if the gvt bails them out, that GM is forced to bring back the EV1.

A Crude Awakening - The Oil Crash

Description

If you've never heard of "peak oil" then you need to rent this movie on Netflix. Or buy a copy, and make all your friends watch it. Be sure and scope the full interviews in the "Extras" - especially the second one, with Simmons.

The Work of Director Michel Gondry

Description

A collection of mostly music videos from the director of "Eternal Sunshine" - (my favorite film). Rent it on Netflix. He's amazingly creative - you'll be inspired. Just the bit of him playing clear drums, where underneath each sits a little boy, looking up - that alone is hilarious. Some of the videos are fantastic. Lucas with the Lid Off, and Jean Francois Coen's "La Tour de Pise" are my faves. I love how he does so many of the special effects in camera.

What a Way to Go: Life at the End of Empire

First to recommend

Description

In spite of the serious subject of this doc, I found myself laughing out loud at the hilarious old film clips the director chose to illustrate his ideas. Some of his words are so inspiring, I wrote them down:
"Will we be lovingly remembered in the songs of our descendants as they recount the story of this lost and very wounded tribe that stepped back from the abyss and found its way home to the community of living souls?"
