Melatonin

First to recommend

Description

The best way to avoid jet lag is to fly during the day, arriving at night when you're exhausted, and everyone else is going to sleep too. In case of emergency, though, Melatonin works great. Just expect some grogginess in the morning. Nothing that can't be cured by a couple of cafe cremes.

French in 10 Minutes a Day (10 Minutes a Day Series)

First to recommend

Description

This series is brilliant. It was first under the Sunset label - the people who put out books on how to remodel your bathroom - and it takes the same practical approach to learning a language. You won't be learning any extraneous phrases. You'll first learn to pronounce everything, then basic traveler's phrases, like how get a taxi, order a room at a hotel. There's a tear out menu so you can translate in restaurants. There are flash cards, and stickers you can put up around your house to learn the names of things. You really can learn enough to get around by just putting in 10 minutes a day, starting about a month before you leave. (I did this with the German version, and it really worked!)

Description

"Ingmar Bergman, le cinéaste de l'âme, s'est éteint." (Ingmar Bergman, filmmaker of the soul, is dead.)
I made Le Figaro my splash page. Every day, I read one article out loud to keep up with my French. Newspaper lingo can be rather challenging, so it's a good workout.
"L'angoisse de l'homme face à la mort, l'amour, la solitude et l’« infinie tristesse du monde sans Dieu » ont fondé l’essentiel de son oeuvre."
Ingmar, je t'aime!
