Ask Moxie - Parenting Advice

3 people recommended this item

Description

I really like Moxie's parenting advice -- the fact that she's very sensitive to the needs of different families, but that she's not afraid to take a stand when it's important.

I was over at her blog this afternoon, commenting on her thread on baby books. She had recommended my book The Mother of All Baby Books and I wanted to thank her and to recommend a couple of other books.

Take a babymoon -- time alone as a new family after your baby arrives. The term "babymoon" was first coined by childbirth educator and author Sheila Kitzinger. (via Having-a-baby.com)

Doulas

Description

Doulas are a laboring (or new mother's) best friend. This page from the DONA International website makes the case for doula care. As the website points out, a growing body of research shows that the use of a doula has clear benefits for families during childbirth and postpartum, with no known risks. Canadian Family: Get More ZZZs

First to recommend

Description

It's easy for "the bill chill" to set in between you and your partner when neither of you is getting enough sleep -- situation normal when there's a new baby in your life. Rather than keeping score about whose turn it is to get up in the night with the baby, "Think of your parental energy as a pooled asset. That way you'll see each other's naps and breaks as something that's good for you both. This fresh perspective should lead to less tossing and turning and, as the chill begins to leave the bedroom, some very good nights for you both." (Read more) (via Baby Sleep Solutions)

Mother the New Mother

First to recommend

Description

See this part of the article: "Don't forget about mothering the new mother -- a tried-and-true tradition in many cultures. If mother-adrenaline has your friend spinning like a top, try to convince her to take a warm bath and catch up on her sleep. She needs to conserve her energy. Motherhood is a marathon, not a sprint event."

My comment: Sometimes people forget all about the new mother in all the excitement about the new baby. A new mom needs practical and emotional support during this exciting but overwhelming time in her life. (via Pregnancy Pampering (Canadian Living))

Canadian Family: Decoding Baby Body Language

First to recommend

Description

Canadian Family magazine recently underwent a design and editorial makeover. The "new" Canadian Family is really in touch with what Canadian parents want -- practical tips, fun-to-read articles, and non-bossy advice. I have had the opportunity to write a few articles for the magazine (e.g., this article on reading your baby's body language) and have been really impressed with the publication's new editorial direction. If you haven't looked at the magazine recently, you might want to check it out.

Breastfeeding Made Simple: Seven Natural Laws for Nursing Mothers

First to recommend

Description

I purchased this book while researching the breastfeeding chapter in one of my recent books. I immediately fell in love with this book -- specifically, with its innovative approach to the material (the seven natural laws) and its warm, supportive, and mother-friendly tone. The authors do a terrific job of explaining the root causes of many common breastfeeding problems in ways that make so much sense. Their section on how taking a "left-brained" approach to the very "right-brained" act of breastfeeding is totally brilliant. I can't praise this book highly enough. (via Amazon.com)

Candela Rechargeable Aqua Lamps

First to recommend

Description

These make a terrific baby gift for new parents. They can be used as a combination night-light and flashlight -- providing just enough of a middle-of-the-night glow to light the way to baby's room in the middle of the night. They also work well in baby's room because they don't get overly hot and they don't rely on electricity for power, so there aren't any electrical cords to worry about. They're a top-selling item in gift shop at the parenting center where I offer many of my parenting workshops and a number of parents that I interviewed for one of my recent books recommended them as a middle-of-the-night essential for parents with night-waking babies. Mabel's Labels: Labels For The Stuff Kids Lose!

First to recommend

Description

Mabel's slogan says it all -- "labels for the stuff kids lose" -- and that includes dishes and other feeding paraphernalia that can go AWOL at daycare or Grandma's as well as school lunch dishes. Be sure to choose the dishwasher-safe labels for anything that's going to be subjected to repeated washings -- and look for Mabel's line of allergy-alert labels if food allergies are a concern for your child.
