Bill Champlin- No Place Left to Fall

First to recommend

Description

It was just announced that Bill Champlin has left the band Chicago after 28 years (!) and will be doing a solo tour later in the year to support his solo release out on August 4, called “No Place Left to Fall”. He will no doubt put on an amazing show with all this great new material.

I’ve been a fan since his earlier CHICAGO days, and an equally big admirer since the Sons of Champlin played the Fillmore West in 1970! I have all his records and this new one is LONG overdue!

“No Place Left to Fall” has an amazing list of contributors performing including: Bruce Gaitsch, George Hawkins, Jr., Billy Ward, Mark Eddinger, Steve Lukather, Peter Cetera, Michael English, Tamara Champlin, Will Champlin and Keith Howland.

Champlin has worked with Chicago for 28 years (Champlin was on lead vocals on their famous tune “Look Away”), Patti LaBelle, Lou Rawls, Elton John, Boz Scaggs, Donna Summer, Nancy Wilson, George Benson, Jimmy Smith, Amy Grant, Neil Diamond, Kenny Rogers, Jason Scheff of Chicago, and Toto’s Bobby Kimball and Joseph Williams and is in the top of the classic rock, AAA, A/C heritage artists.

Everybody Else- Everybody Else

First to recommend

Description

If you've ever wondered what Summer sounds like, then take a listen to this beautiful debut of an album. Pulsing yet pastoral lyrics make anyone and everyone reminisce about that single Summer- you know, the one with the girl, the guy, the beach, and anything unforgettable. This amazing record, however, comprised of 3 talented friends (one of whom is a Harvard graduate), will stay with you long after Summer, with classical rocking sounds that never get old, but a hint of underground style to keep everything fresh. This album is a MUST.

Volifonix- Oregonisms

First to recommend

Description

What's better....pulling deeply on a pint of crisp and hoppy northwest microbrew or chilling out while funky songs about everything from parties to art & passion to positions against "the man" pulsate from your speakers?

If you answered "both" pour yourself a cold one and check out Oregonisms (topsecret records 2009) from Eugene darlings, Volifonix (aka VFX) who happen to be on tour all year and who are blissfully blessed in being fueled by the NW's newest cult beer makers; "Ninkasi Brewing Company.”

Catch a whiff of life in a northern town, Volifonix style. Mmmmm....smoove!

If you like 311, Decemberists, Silver Sun Pickups, Akron/Family, RHCP’s, Zepplin, Pink Floyd, Parliament Funkadelic, Earth Wind & Fire or Jeff Buckley, you’ll love Volifonix!

Coconut Records- Nighttiming

First to recommend

Description

This solo indie-pop project is headed by none other than the cult favorite, Jason Schwartzman. Unbeknown to most, this actor is the real deal, truly able to sing and write soft jams with the right amount of edge. His smash single "West Coast" has been featured in the television phenomenon, "The O.C.", and several other Coconut Records singles appeared in Schwartzman's recent blockbuster, "Funny People". The tunes are all mellow, with fantastic melodies to keep you interested, and lyrics so blunt you'll never get bored.

The Virgins- The Virgins

First to recommend

Description

Formed in 2006, in NYC, The Virgins released their EP in 2007. Fittingly enough, this new wave sound was featured in the Manhattan- based series, "Gossip Girl", with the hit single "One Week of Danger". The Virgins have finally released their debut self-titled album, featuring more songs, each taking you back to the gritty yet endearing charm of the city. These three guys provide a new wave sound that somehow manages to come off as classic, probably due to the hint of British rock/pop they seem to sprinkle in flawlessly. If you want an album that you can listen to from start to finish and still feel like you're getting a taste of new music, then this is for you.

As one review stated: "precisely catchy".

Oracular Spectacular ~ MGMT

21 people recommended this item

Description

Although this album may have reached its popularity height last Summer, I for one, have not gotten the least bit tired of the electrifying, pulsating sounds. "Oracular Spectacular" is not only the album's title, but a feeling of electro-pop fantasy one enters whenever hearing this one of a kind duo! This new electro beat has been called "neo-psychadelic fun", "trance-enducing", and "rule-breaking greatness". While the beats are danceable, catchy, and sizzling, it is the otherworldly lyrics throughout this album that make it an absolute must for this season!

Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix: Phoenix

5 people recommended this item

Description

These French indie-rockers have done it again! With phoenix's fourth album come the usual alternative-pop tunes, always resonating deeply thanks to catchy melodies. This Summer album, however, offers a surprise, with half disco-pop and half indie-pop, coming together to create a whimsical rockish sound- incomparable to anything out there today. "Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix" contains a synth sound well ahead of its time and perfect for this beautiful, exciting time of year.

We Sing, We Dance, We Steal Things

5 people recommended this item

Description

From the minute this album begins to play, it's clear that Mraz has yet again created a sweet, Summery, folk-pop sound, never once reaching a dull beat. His ability to semi-rap/semi-speed-talk through his flawlessly-written lyrics comes off as simply breezy, effortless pop. Mraz provides us with words that are both picturesque and pensive, clear on the #1 hit single, "I'm Yours". We also receive a special surprise on this album, by a fellow Summer songstress, Colbie Caillat, in the beautiful pop duet- "Lucky". Additionally, James Morrison is featured on the moodier tune, "Details in the Fabric". While this album is certainly a compilation of beachy guitar tunes, its eclectic folklore does nothing less than leave you sublimely happy.

Los Campesinos!- Hold on Now, Youngster

First to recommend

Description

Full of infectious dance numbers, poppy punk, and unique hooks, this debut burts noisily onto the welcomed scene. The contrast between the female and male vocals creates a new, upbeat sound, giving our ears a break from tired, monotone, and sad "indie" albums. The fast-paced music, coupled with the hidden sarcasm in the lyrics makes this record an absolute winner. "Hold on Now, Youngster" is filled with the sound you've been waiting for, making it impossible for you to not jump around crazily.

For fans of: indie-pop, power-punk, Bell & Sebastian, TV on the Radio, The Walkmen, The Thrills, The 88, Ima Robot (via Amazon)

We Started Nothing: The Ting Tings

4 people recommended this item

Description

There's no denying that this is a pop album, but hey, what's wrong with pop? Each song, from start to finish, gives you something to dance to and/or about, making it perfect for Summertime. The Ting Tings have already had a lot of mainstream success, with "Fruit Machine" being featured in "He's Just Not That Into You" and their two singles "Shut Up and Let Me Go" and "That's Not My Name" climbing up the billboards and the newly released "Great DJ" quickly following suit. This album offers funky (but great) fun, so dive in and take a listen!
