Carcassonne

Description
This is the one that hooked me into eurogaming!!! The classic "gateway game" for nongamers and gamers alike... who knew that putting tiles together to build cities and roads could be so much fun? It's different every time you play, there is plenty of opportunity to strategize, it's easy to learn, can be played by 2 to 5 people.... We are addicted to this game at my house!!!!
official description:
Winner of the Spiel des Jahres (Game of the Year) for 2001.
A clever tile-laying game. The southern French city of Carcassonne is famous for its unique Roman and Medieval fortifications. The players develop the area around Carcassonne and deploy their followers on the roads, in the cities, in the cloisters, and in the fields. The skill of the players to develop the area will determine who is victorious.
Special rules for the 12 river tiles (River Expansion I included): Remove the special starting tile from the game. Instead, begin the game by laying the spring that starts the river. Set aside the lake tile and schuffle the remaining 10 river tiles face down and draw from these before drawing from the tiles from the normal game. These tiles ae played and followers may be played as in the normal game with one exception: a river tile may not be placed so that the river makes a "U" turn. Followers may not be placed on rivers. Once these 10 river tiles have been played, the next player plays the lake and then play continues with the normal tiles.

Rat-A-Tat-Cat

Description
I was sure I would be playing Rat-A-Tat-Cat just to entertain my 6-year old given the childish name and drawing style. I was surprised to discover that she likes the game "a little" and I keep asking to play it again. Yes, it's simple and a game can last mere minutes, but the combination of memory, bluffing, and randomness adds up to a fun time.

Quoridor

Description
Deceptively simple at first, the deeper Quoridor strategies unfold through experience and competitive play. A game which you thought you had won can suddenly change course in a dramatic fashion. We had originally purchased the kids version of the game which is slightly smaller, but I would recommend this higher quality wood set.

clue, the board game

Description
Clue is a classic board game that has survived the years. Beginners can start off with some basic logic (process of elimination) but advanced players can keep track of everything from what other players ask to where they travel (or don't). Everything can be a clue.

Paradux

Description
The rules of Paradux are simple: Try to get four of your color in a row and always move adjacent balls of opposite colors in parallel. The tactics and strategies may not be quite as simple, though. In a couple days of playing my family tends to have very short games where one person wins quickly because the other person didn't see a move coming, and occasional games that drag on because both players are focusing on defense. I'm not sure about the longevity of the game, but it's fun for now and the wood game set is attractive.
