The Wisdom of the Chinese Kitchen: Classic Family Recipes for Celebration and Healing
First to recommend
Description
This recipes in this cookbook aren't the recipes you'd find in your usual Mongolian-Beef-Kung-Pao-Chicken-Egg-Rolls Chinese cookbook. Instead, what you'll find are traditional recipes usually cooked in Chinese homes: rice porridge, steamed pork with salted duck egg, even herbal soups. Grace Young also tells a story in each chapter about why the recipes are such an important part of her family's life--stories that I can definitely relate to as a Chinese-American.

Description
If you could only own one cookbook, this would be it. It's a comprehensive collection of basic, tried and true recipes that have been tested by the chefs at America's Test Kitchen. There's even a story at the beginning of each recipe that tells you how the recipe was tested, what mistakes were made and what they liked before coming up with the final recipe. What this means is that chances of you f*cking up your food are slim since other people already f*cked it up for you!

This was the book that educated me on all the goodies at my local Japanese grocery store. Now I cook regularly with all kinds of new stuff like konyakku, dried bonito and abur-age!

"Before there was Bill Buford there was Steingarten. Few people are as erudite and no one is as food-obsessed as Steingarten, who will follow any food trail to literal absurdity." Read this first, then the follow-up, It Must Have Been Something I Ate.
