Be a Happy and Successful Author: A 9-Step Plan on Squidoo

First to recommend

Description

This page summarizes what I've learned about being a writer -- boiled down to nine tips. (It didn't work out to an even ten. Hey, that's life.) I've also recommended five of my favorite books about writing. I'm going to post about those book recommendations separately, too, but if you want all those recommendations in one place, here they are.)

D*I*Y Planner | Paper, productivity & passion

First to recommend

Description

Imagine being able to produce a sophisticated and customized paper-based personal organizer -- for FREE. That's what D*I*Y Planner is all about. You choose modules that suit your life, print out the size and version you want, and -- voila! -- you've got a planner that can rival the best planners in the business without spending a dime.

If you want the latest and greatest and coolest go for the Hipster, a smaller format planner that's designed to print out on 3" x 5" index cards.

The D*I*Y Planner community is also worth checking out -- a place to talk about time management, personal productivity, and David Allen's bestselling book Getting Things Done. (via http://www.43folders.com)

Remember The Milk

First to recommend

4 people recommended this item

Description

I'm an author and a mom of four. Before I found Remember the Milk (a free online organizer that allows you to have as many to do lists as you want), my to do list system consisted of a million post-it-notes and notes on napkins stuffed in my purse, stuck to my laptop, and missing in action in my life.

Now I can email tasks to myself as I think of them and they land in one place -- in Remember the Milk. I can even email tasks on to my husband (let me tell you he lives for those emails from me) or to my office assistant (ditto).

This is the coolest online organizer ever, and it can quickly be configured to work with David Allen's Getting Things Done system if, like me, you're a GTD devote.

I've written about Remember the Milk (http://www.rmilk.com for short) in magazine columns and on blogs galore and I'm not done spreading the word yet.

Description

43 Folders is a highly popular blog that focuses on personal productivity, life hacks (doing things smarter), and simple ways to make your life a little better. It's the brain child of Merlin Mann, a writer, entrepreneur, and all-round fascinating guy. The site has been recognized by Technorati as one of the Top 100 blogs, and it attracts over 40,000 visitors a day. When I visit the site, I never fail to pick up great leads on productivity tools (e.g., online organizating tools or browser add-ons that can help me be better organized) or new ways of making my writing life or mom life function a little more smoothly.

Squidoo

First to recommend

Description

The definition of Squidoo reads as follows: Squidoo: SKWID-OO, n. v., adj., addiction. 1) thousands of people creating a handbuilt catalog of the best stuff online 2) a free and fun way to make your own page and get traffic 3) a place to find what you're looking for, fast.

Basically, Squidoo-ing is about building "lenses" that focus on topics you're passionate and knowledgeable about. There are lenses devoted to pretty much everything you can image -- making your own envelopes, working from a corner coffee shop, and making the best-ever grilled cheese sandwich. The first lens I ever stumbled across was a terrific lens about batch cooking (Once a Month Cooking). Now I have nine lenses of my own -- and counting).

Like ThisNext, Squidoo is highly addictive. Proceed with caution. (via Once a Month Cooking)

Parent Hacks: Real-world parenting tips from real parents

First to recommend

2 people recommended this item

Description

This is where the Web is headed -- at least where parents are concerned: parenting tips by parents, for parents, about what really works with kids.

I'm a huge fan of the site. I love its down-to-earth philosophy and its grassroots style.

You won't find any experts pontificating from on high here (thankfully).

It's all about parents sharing their best "hacks" (solutions) to the problem du jour. That can be anything from getting kids to sleep, to dealing with mealtime madness, to tackling toilet training, to navigating the baby products aisle. (I'm only just touching on the range of "hacks" you'll find at this one-of-a-kind parenting site. You have to check it out for yourself to truly "get" Parent Hacks. (via The Mother of All Lenses)
