The Maltese Falcon

First to recommend

Description

Dashiell Hammetts's great hard boiled detective novel. It has the best group of villians in American fiction, all out to gain possession of the priceless statue. It is full of twist and turns, and moves with exhilarating speed. Sam Spade is the prototype for all detectives who follow in this all American genre. The final chapter when Spade turns in his love interest is priceless.

The Count of Monte Cristo

First to recommend

Description

When I was in school, we were required to read 'The Count of Monte Cristo' by Alexandre Dumas, and I have to admit it was one of the few book that grabbed my attention.

Set against the tumultuous years of the post-Napoleonic era, The Count of Monte Cristo recounts the swashbuckling adventures of Edmond Dantes, a dashing young sailor falsely accused of treason. The story of his long imprisonment, dramatic escape, and carefully wrought revenge offers up a vision of France that has become immortal.

A gripping novel...

The Haj

First to recommend

Description

The Haj, by Leon Uris, chronicles the plight of a Palestian family caught up in the 1948 war to establish the state of Israel. Although it is very pro Israel, it gives great incite into those times and the present. There's a great deal of compassion for Haj Ibrahim and his family, as they struggle to survive, as refugees. This story reveals a great deal about the trouble and history of the Middle East.

Borstal Boy

First to recommend

Description

Borstal Boy is the autobiographical account of Brendan Behan's youthful run with the IRA, his arrest, trial, sentencing, incarceration, and final release. All this is captured in a excitingly paced, brash, narrative, that remains engrossing and humorous throughout.
It captures the essence of the man himself.

Heart of Darkness

Description

Joseph Conrad explores the depths of the heart of man, as the main character, Marlow, relates his story of exploring the heart of Africa during the peak of Belgian Imperialism. In the story there is a man named Kurtz who has gone into Africa with the best intentions of society, to reform the natives living deep within the heart of Africa. Kurtz goes into Africa resolved to, as Kipling puts it, "take up the white mans burden."

Kurtz out in the wilderness believes that once we are freed from the accountability of society, we let ourselves dissolve to our most vile form and we use whatever tool we have with the belief that there will be no consequences.

A fascinating and thoughful book that I had to study in school because it related to the atrocities done by the Belgians while in the Congo.

Norman Mailer's account of a recon platoon in the South Pacific is engrossing and fascinating. His development of each character and their interactions with each other is brilliant. The best novel to be written about WWII.
