It is a sometimes brilliant always engrosssing allegorical tale of a white girls life as a slave, after a Chinese victory in post WW1. This alternative history parallels and gives great insight into the black experience in America. Also, it is just a good read.

Keep the Aspidistra Flying (Harvest Book)

First to recommend

Description

Orwell's brilliant prose and wit are displayed here, in a ironic tale of a poet who commits himself to poverty, and worries over his ablility to make his cigarettes last until next payday. He blames his lack of fortune on his lack of fame, but the truth is he just isn't very good as a poet. A satiric look at a self imposed starving artist railing at society.

The inimitable Audrey Hepburn lives on. I saw this wonderfully illustrated biography -- created with the Audrey Hepburn Children's Fund -- Audrey's own words are given center stage to create a unique personal narrative.

Here Speeching American: A Very Strange Guide to English as It Is Garbled Around the World

First to recommend

Description

The celebrated authors of the perennial bestseller The 776 Stupidest Things Ever Said set the typical travel guide squarely on its head–taking you from the airport to the hotel, from sightseeing to dining out–by using 100 percent real examples of fractured English as spoken and posted abroad. Here are a couple of examples:

Feel like shopping?
We have no good things to sell.
shop sign, Lovina Beach, Bali

Wondering what to wear?
A sports jacket may be worn to dinner, but no trousers.
In a French hotel brochure

The book is totally hysterical and a must-read!!

The Wal-Mart Effect: How the World's Most Powerful Company Really Works--and How It's Transforming the American Economy

First to recommend

Description

After seeing the frightening documentary about the worst of Walmart's business practices, I am tempted to buy this book. One of the major issue addressed in the book is how Wal-Mart is forcing companies to imitate. Of course, this results in lower prices but the overall long term effect on our economy is debatable.

This replacement of quality with cheapness is troubling in that it results in a new culture of low costs which means that Wal-Mart must relentlessly scurry to satisfy the customers' demands that its practices have created. So Wal-Mart increasingly buys off-shore sweat shop products to keep down prices, and in the process is forcing more and more American wholesellers, already struggling to survive, to shut down their U.S. operations and move overseas where labor and production costs are lower.

The Wire in the Blood (by Val McDermid)

First to recommend

Description

I am currently reading the book and it is very hard to put down. I have seen all the BBC TV show 'Wire in the Blood' series, but reading the book is actually more thrilling.

Val McDermid is a well-practiced author of British police procedural mysteries. This book is one of a series centered on the profiler Tony Hill, whose methods are mistrusted by more conventional police officers. In this case, the serial killer is a high-profile public personality described as the third most trusted person in England. McDermid's descriptions of the hunt for this murderer, including the tangents and false leads, are well done.
