About this list:

I love games - they are a great way to get away from the television and interact with the folks you care about. Plus, they teach good social skills and abstract thinking, something we all need no matter what our age!

Blokus

Description

Blockus is a board game that combines logic, strategy, spatial perception and a healthy dose of laughter. It's one of those rare games that is challenging and fun for everybody in our family from our 3 year old daughter and 8 year old son to the aunts and uncles.

Though the rules are simple to learn, no matter how good you are, it seems that you can always think of new strategies to try. The thinking that goes into this is unlike other spatial games which brings an extra element of excitement into the playing.

This is one of those games we carry with us and introduce to others. In fact, we need to purchase another copy as the last family we shared it with loved it so much we left the game with them.
There is also a travel sized Blokus for packing on long trips. (Warning: Don't lose any pieces!)

Quiddler Card Game

Description

rummy with letters instead of your conventional card deck! Great for all ages because all that is required is being able to link letters to spell basic words... Every round you get a additional card - first hand 3 cards, second hand 4 cards, etc. It's become the game of choice at my house!

here's the description from the website.

For the FUN of words!

Quiddler®, the short word game - is a breakthrough in word games. Because short words, like 'at', 'is', 'of', 'ax','ow' and 'zoo' can lead to winning, readers of all ages can play and win. There are bonuses for both short and long words. You simply combine all the cards in your hand into words. The words don't have to be related and you don't play off other player's words. In the first round players get three cards, in the second round four cards, on up to 10 cards in the last round. Just words. Just fun.

Balloon Cup

First to recommend

Description

Another great card game for 2 people from the Kosmos 2 Player series of eurogames. Simple to understand, but with plenty of room for competition and strategy. We play this game a lot at my house!

official description:
In Balloon Cup, the players compete in several short balloon flights (hops) to collect the colored cubes associated with each hop. When a player has collected enough cubes of a given color, he earns the trophy card for that color. Players may even trade 3 otherwise useless cubes for 1 they can use. The first player to earn 3 trophy cards is the winner!

Each player has a hand of eight balloon cards. The players play their balloons on mountain or plain hops. Players play their high-valued balloons on the mountains and their low-valued balloons on the plains. Players usually play their balloons on their side of the hops, but winds (and cunning) can cause them to play on their opponent’s side, a move that can ruin their opponent’s plans.

Description

This is one of those games that seems slightly too nerdy when you read about it, but it's one of the best two player games I've ever played. It revolves around developing areas around an established trade route, and then trying to control these areas. I just realized, I can't make this sound amazing in print, but try it ... you'll love it. (via FunAgain)

Ticket To Ride Europe - Board Game

First to recommend

Description

I've just gotten introduced to Eurogames and I'm having a blast!!!! Who knew board games could be so much fun??? This is quickly becoming one of the favorites at my house. It is easy to learn and still challenging, the game components are well made, the board is beautifully done.... I give it 5 stars!!!!!!!!

I've only played the Ticket to Ride -Europe version, but I'm sure the other's are just as much fun! There are several versions, each covering a different geographical area.

Description:
With elegantly simple game play, Ticket to Ride can be learned in 3 minutes, yet players face strategic and tactical decisions that vary with every turn. Players collect cards of various types of train cars that are then used to claim railway routes connecting various cities across a map of North America. The longer the routes the more points they earn."

Mancala

First to recommend

Description

I avoided this game for years because I thought it was complicated - boy was I wrong!! It is easy to learn, but hard to master. Fun for kids and adults alike, and a great 5 to 10 minute game.

The description from the website:
The strategy game from Africa now can be played anywhere, anytime! For thousands of years, people have enjoyed playing a simple game of strategy called Mancala—an arithmetic challenge to capture the most pieces in your mancala bowl. Travel Mancala’s sturdy hinge and fastener make it perfect for travel. Features three sets of rules. Made from the non-endangered, plantation-grown wood of the raintree. The object is to collect the most beads in your large mancala bowls by sequentially dropping stones around the board.
