Spin, by Robert Charles Wilson

Description
If you're a scifi fan, it's hard to go wrong with Hugo award winners. The book "Spin" contains some great hard scifi concepts plus some reasonably good character development.

The Happiest Days of Our Lives by Wil Wheaton

Description
The Happiest Days of Our Lives made me smile too many times to count. Wil's lighthearted and nostalgic stories flow easily and the time slips by until the book is done and you wonder where you can get more. Fortunately, you *can* get more on his blog: http://wilwheaton.typepad.com/ (via Wil Wheaton)

Natural Selection, by Dave Freedman

Description
Natural Selection was thoroughly a enjoyable read (or "listen" in my case with Audible.com). The suspense is tangible, the action thrilling, and the science almost believable. This is the kind of stuff I used to expect from Michael Chrichton when he was writing great fiction.

Next by Michael Crichton

Description
Were Michael Chrighton's earlier works really that much better or am I just getting more judgemental in my old age? Next had a few spots that grabbed my attention and raised a few interesting questions, but I didn't feel like it really held or flowed together as a whole story. Still, it's Michael Chrighton and I'm nowhere near the point where I would question if I am going to read something he writes.

The Traveler, by John Twelve Hawks

Description
The Traveler is a combination of science fiction, thriller, and techno-political preaching. Some of the surveilance monitoring technology in this book seems a bit far fetched for today, but we are definitely headed in that direction. I enjoyed the thriller/adventure aspects of The Traveler.

American Gods

Description
I listened to the audible version of this book. If I had started the paperback book, I'm sure I would have tossed it after the first chapter, but when you're on a long commute, you take what you can get so I stuck with it. I'm glad I did. Though American Gods is far from the type of book I would normally read, once I understood where Gaiman was coming from I really enjoyed the story and probably learned a bit without knowing it.

This is:
Altered Carbon by Richard K. Morgan
First to recommend
Description
Fast paced, intense, adult, very enjoyable, modern sci fi.
This is the first of the "Takeshi Kovacs" series, but the stories are sufficiently disjoint that you shouldn't need to read them in any particular order.

Description
This is the book that made me want to read everything written by Robert J. Sawyer. I have yet to be disappointed.

God's Debris by Scott Adams
First to recommend
Description
Very fast read (almost a "booklet"). Gets you thinking about things you may not have considered before. Adams challenges you to find the flaws that he knows are buried in what is presented.

The Religion War by Scott Adams
First to recommend
Description
A very fast and entertaining read and may stimulate some brain cells along the way. Read "God's Debris" first just to get a bit of background.
I also highly recommend Scott Adams blog where he talks about random things including concepts discussed in this book. In the blog you'll see the funny side of Scott Adams, too. There is no humor in these two books (or it's just too subtle for me).
