My favorite band ever, and probably my favorite record of 2006 (so far at least). This album totally made my summer. (via esh)

Rather Ripped by Sonic Youth

Description

Sonic Youth are like parents are something - they can bug the hell out of you so bad you wish they'd just go away and leave you alone forever, but in the end your heart's filled with undying love and you're so grateful that they exist. "Rather Ripped" is probably my 12th or 13th most favorite Sonic Youth record, which is to say it's still one of the most beloved albums to have been released in my lifetime.

First Impressions of Earth by The Strokes

Description

At first I was mad at this record for not being as perfect as the first two Strokes albums, but eventually I came around to loving so many of the songs. Julian Casablancas will always own part of my heart.

Crushing Love by Some Girls

First to recommend

Description

One of my goals in life is to make lots of people realize that Juliana Hatfield is a truly great songwriter. I don't seem to have made much progress yet, so here it goes: "Crushing Love," like Some Girls' debut "Feel It" and all of J.H.'s solo records, reveal her to be so skilled at composing pop songs that - to quote a review I wrote earlier this year - "turn heartache into something shiny and lovely, just so we can feel good about feeling bad for at least three-and-a-half minutes." I think that's a pop singer's most noble duty, and Juliana does it better than practically any other artist I can think of today. This album won't change your life (you know, like something by The Shins would - haha), but it'll make you pogo around and sing along while contemplating the complexities of love and loneliness, and it might also make you want very badly to pick up a guitar and wail away. Which is an awesome thing indeed.

Rabbit Fur Coat by Jenny Lewis

Description

Although certain loyalties established when I was about 11-years-old preclude me from naming anything other than the Red Hot Chili Peppers' "Stadium Arcadium" as my favorite album of 2006, "Rabbit Fur Coat" by Jenny Lewis and the Watson Twins comes in as a very much beloved close second. I've got no excuse for taking so long to realize what an amazing songwriter she is, but for some reason this record grabs me so much more than anything I've heard by Rilo Kiley. Favorite tracks: "What Loves You Back," the brilliant cover of the Traveling Wilburys' "Handle With Care," and "Happy," which is so good that I can't even listen to it anymore.

Incredible. Quite possibly the best of 2006. Definitely in top 10 for 2006 at least. (via HireThisGuy)
