Table Wines at Everyday Prices - a list by Jessyca

About this list:
I drink a lot of wine and I'm always trying new wines. I also know love the satisfaction that comes with getting good value for my money. Wine is such a subjective and image-oriented industry that what a bottle costs rarely reflects it's actual quality, taste, or value. Here are my sure-fire wins for exceptionally good value and under $15!

2005 Peter Lehmann Shiraz Barossa Valley South Australia
First to recommend
Description
Definitely one of my favorite syrahs! This wine was introduced to me be a fellow ThisNexter and it was introduced to her through a friend, too. It's an affordable syrah, definitely a full-bodied red but without the tannin overload. Has a silky fruity thing going on and the finish makes you enjoy every second this wine is in your mouth. Gotta go get another bottle... mine's almost empty!

Bridlewood Estate Winery - Syrah 2005 (any vintage really)

Description
I really like the Syrahs from this winery. They're full-bodied but not overwhelming and don't stick to your tongue on the way down. They usually have a fruity/sweetish undertone, but they're not fruity or sweet. Definitely got that Santa Ynez terroir thing going on--which I happen to dig. Best of all, this one's only $18. They have some better ones, too, but a wine cabinet full of these makes me happy.

Newman's Own Cabernet Sauvignon Red Wine
First to recommend
Description
I purchased this at CostPlus World Market a couple of weeks ago. I was a little skeptical as most celebrity and private-label wines are ordinary, but I have never tried a Paul Newman product I didn't LOVE, so I figured what the hey. It turns out it was delish and a wine I'd be proud to serve to company. I've got the Chardonnay chilling in the fridge so stay tuned for that recommendation if it earns one.

"Big Yellow Cab" Cabernet Sauvignon
First to recommend
Description
Ordering wine by the glass at inexpensive restaurants is always a crapshoot. The other night one of my wine friends and I ordered this one at the House of Blues on Sunset Blvd. We liked it! Not the best wine we've ever had, but it's affordable and I think worth it's price-point. It's pretty full-bodied and doesn't have anything particularly special about it, but the smoothness/price-point combination makes it a good choice for an everyday dinner at home... or even a birthday party in a restaurant.

Chateau Souverain Cabernet Sauvignon 2005 / Sonoma - Alexander Valley
First to recommend
Description
I have a general rule of thumb when picking out a Cabernet Sauvignon. If it comes from Alexander Valley it's gonna be good. I'm certain there are exceptions to this rule, but I have yet to encounter one. And this wine was LOVELY. Smooth and light-flavored, but distinctive. Would love to have another bottle if only I could find one! I may just order a few from this site ;)

Bogle Petite Sirah

A classic. Always welcome in my pantry of wine love and on my table. Not as heavy as a regular Syrah.

Description
They say, "This wine's seductive, feminine wiles will enchant you from the moment you pop the cork. A sparkling rosé with a strawberry and rose petal perfume followed by juicy flavors reminiscent of framboise, red cherry and citrus zing. It's fruity, but not cloying, crisp and refreshing. This is the perfect wine for imagining yourself at a beachfront café in the South of France."
I say, "This was a fun (especially the bottle) bright rose which was exactly what it was supposed to be--a nice treat on a sunny Sunday (or Saturday) afternoon during the summer. I'd happily consume another bottle of this one."

Clos du Bois Pinot Grigio 2006
First to recommend
Description
I had this one at Palamino over in Westwood. I define this restaurant as "nice ambience, better than average food, better than average LA prices, but not one of my favorites." Regardless, I ordered the Clos du Bois Pinot Grigio and enjoyed it. I used to be a huge Pinot Grigio girl, but I got tired of either too dry or too fruity in the cheaper ones. This one gets my seal of approval though... now if only the Pavilions by my house would start carrying it!

Angeline 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon Alexander Valley (Martin Ray)
First to recommend
Description
They say, "Tasting Notes - This wine has a deep garnet hue and aromas of lush fruit: black cherry, cassis and vanilla. The rich black cherry and plum flavors are layered with hints of vanilla, creamy oak and cassis that linger on the palate. The finish is smooth and satisfying, with soft tannins complementing the intense fruit."
I say, "A nice wine, went well with my dinner of salad and home made truffled potato chips. At $12.99 I'd totally buy this again, but it's more of an everyday wine."
I suspect the Penthouse wasn't thrilled with us for bringing our own but their wine list is so unreliable and odd that I didn't want to chance it.

2004 Vina Santurnia Rioja Crianza
First to recommend
Description
Wow. So, I bought a one-month subscription to Wine Spectator online and downloaded their little chart thingy which says what the point estimate is for a region and a grape. We went to the Wine House (on Cotner in West Los Angeles) and bought "cheapish" wines from the best years in the best regions with the best grapes. I gotta say, so far, I'm happy with the results. Especially this one which is so delicious I can't stop pouring more. And only $10.99 a bottle!!
