2009 was a big year for black faces on the news stand, I'm still not sure who got move magazine covers, President Obama or Michael Jackson. One of my favorite MJ covers is Wax Poetics Issue 37, featuring Mike looking at us in the eye, makes you wonder what was on his mind.

TIME Magazine Cover: Why Main Street Hates Wall Street - Nov. 9, 2009

First to recommend

Description

One of my favorite Time Magazine covers. It came out during the great recession of 09, I imagine that may people chose to read the story online, which eats into the bottom line for this legendary magazine. But Time is cleaver and has found a way to get a little cash by offering their covers for sale on their web site.

Vogue Italia: The Barbie Issue - 2009 July issue

First to recommend

Description

I'd like to recommend Vogue Italia supplement publication The Barbie Issue. The Barbie Issue features So In Style dolls; which have been designed with more authentic-looking black features, including a new facial sculpt that has fuller lips, a wider nose, more distinctive cheek bones and curlier hair.

"Barbie has been an icon for whole generations which is why I really wanted to give a strong sign in step with the times, and dedicate the anniversary issue to Black Barbie," Sozzani said.

And by the way, in 1967 the first black doll from Barbie was introduced as a friend of Barbie called Francie, followed by the first "Black Barbie" doll, introduced in 1980.

The Barbie Issue continues Vogue Italia's public conversation of physical diversity as it is represented in fashion. Back in the July 2008 issue of Vogue Italia the publication celebrated the best of fashion’s black models including Naomi Campbell, Jourdan Dunn, Iman and Sessilee Lopez. Just thought you might like to know, that issue sold out quickly and has become a sought after collectors item. Nuff said ^_^

P.S. the July issue features the wonderful Kristen McMenamy on the cover

Rolling Stone Issue 1084

First to recommend

Description

The epic tale of Michael Jackson is a captivating late 20th century story of an extraordinary artist who's quixotic image amplified his artistic vision into mythic proportions. It's interesting to me to see a Rolling Stone Magazine 's take on the Jackson story.

RS 1084 was published a few weeks after Michael Jackson's untimely passing at a time when questions about his death resulted in a series of autopsies, that kept his body from being released to a final resting place. Like other magazines the cover story begins to look at what Mr Jackson's last days might have been like, and what impact Jackson's unfinished masterpiece would have had on his legacy.

The Rolling Stone was born around the same time that young Michael Jackson (at 10 years old) wowed the public with his brothers The Jackson 5. As Michael Jackson grew up and changed appearance and artistic direction, so did RS, and since Rolling Stone Magazine has followed Michael Jackson's story from the very beginning I feel that there is a kind of even ground that this story might be given coming from a editors who might view Jackson as one of their own.
