Description
Terrific debut album. U2's early music was punk-y and driven, and this album exemplifies the fire and drive they had even then. Really catchy songs like "Electric Co" and "I Will Follow" balance with more mellow moments like "Into the Heart" and "The Ocean".

October: U2

Description
For their second album, U2 focuses on their faith. The title track will break your heart with its sparse beauty. Perhaps not the most even album, but a solid second album, showing signs of maturity.

War: U2

Description
U2 gets aggressive again on their third studio album. Tackling topics from race issues to atomic bombs and the troubles in Ireland, they yelp and drive their way through a terrific set. Capped off with perennial fan favorite and show ender "40". Yes, the religious tropes are still here, but they look outward again. My favorites off the album are "Two Hearts Beat As One", "Seconds", and of course "Sunday Bloody Sunday"

Under a Blood Red Sky: U2

Description
Live EP that served as an entryway for many people to U2's early work. It's a pretty good recording, capturing a lot of their live energy. Personally, I don't think any of the live tracks outshine the album cuts, but it's pretty solid for a live album.

The Unforgettable Fire: U2

Description
Seriously great album, recorded at legendary Slane Castle. There's still an edge to the sound, but it's moving away from the agressive rawnes of the early music, to a more mature sound. Key tracks: "The Unforgettable Fire", "Pride (In the Name of Love)" and my personal favorite "Bad".

Captive: The Edge

Description
Interesting, sort-of atmospheric soundtrack written by The Edge. Very mellow overall, but with one song sung by Sinead O'Connor, which must have been the theme song.

Description
The album that broke America, rightfully so, now with tons of extra stuff. The first CD is the remastered version of the classic album. Everyone knows the first three songs, as they were the mega-singles: "Where the Streets Have No Name", "With or Without You" and "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For", but for me, the real magic happens after this. "Running to Stand Still" is simple and gorgeous in its sad majesty. "In God's Country", "Red Hill Mining Town", and "Trip Through Your Wires" are great rock songs, sparse in production but in a way that's open and expansive, much like the desert sky seen in the photographs for the album.
The second CD is full of extras, from some new orriginal songs "Walk on the Water", "Race Against Time" etc, but also different versions of some great classic songs and B-Sides. I love that "Silver and Gold" is on there, since it's probably one of my favorite overlooked U2 tracks, and "Sweetest Thing" as well. There's also a DVD, with live performances of classic songs, from "I Will Follow" to "Exit" (a rarity which is great to see).

Not just your average soundtrack to a concert documentary. Contains songs only found on this album, like "Angel of Harlem", "When Love Comes to Town" and "All I Want Is You". The live version of "Silver and Gold" is one of my all-time favorite songs. While the movie might not be a must-own, the album certainly is.

Description
My personal favorite U2 album, and seminal as far as production goes. Eno and Lanois helped U2 take the wall of sound to a whole new level. Some overlooked favorites include "Ultraviolet (Light My Way)" and "Acrobat".

Zooropa: U2

Description
To be honest, this is my least favorite U2 album. I really love Pop, the other experimental album, but Zooropa felt more uneven to me. Don't get me wrong, there are still some great songs on here that I would be bereft without, like "Stay (Faraway So Close)", "Numb" (the best Edge track ever! and probably one of the most experimental that they've done), and "The First Time". And "Babyface" and "Lemon" are good as well, although Bono's falsetto on the later is a bit odd to my ears.
