Great Green Goods - a list by todbrilliant

About this list:
Remember, the movement toward a sustainable future will not be built upon buying DIFFERENT products, but buying LESS. Don't think that 'buying organic' will save the world. The world needs less of everything, except education. And remember, marketing is not education. So don't believe the green hype. . . it's just a sales gimmick in many cases. That said, here are some things that I feel fine about purchasing!

Books from the Earth Policy Institute - Plan B 2.0: Rescuing a Planet Under Stress and a Civilization in Trouble
First to recommend
Description
There isn’t a single book in print that more perfectly explains how we’ve arrived at our current environmental crisis, or, unlike Gore’s film, what to do about it.
If you purchase this book, and aren't completely impressed, I will personally refund your purchase price.

Description
This is the most comprehensive and fashion-forward eco-chic boutique I’ve yet to find in California. Carries my favorite lines (see #6 above) and has introduced me to a number of others. Dedicated not only to green sustainability but fair labor practices. (via www.arboretumapparel.com)

Entermodal: Vegetable Tanned Luxury Leather (TreeHugger)
First to recommend
Description
“Sustainable leather” may seem an oxymoron. Not so with Entermodal’s revolutionary product line. Handmade by artisans, the quality matches Prada, LV and the other lux players. The difference is that Entermodal’s bags are better designed AND Entermodal goes beyond the call of duty to adhere to strict ethical and environmental guidelines. (via www.entermodal.com)

Heat: How to Stop the Planet from Burning

Description
How do we save the planet before it’s too late? Monbiot is one of the very few who actually has a specific plan to reduce emissions by 90% within 30 years. If we don’t hit these numbers, if we settle for less, we’re all cooked. And believe me, our kids will point the fingers directly at us and ask us why we didn’t pay attention to people like Monbiot. Pictured bucket is twice as tall as the baby unit I purchased. (via www.gaiam.com)

The Long Emergency: Surviving the Converging Catastrophes of the Twenty-First Century

Description
The world as we know it, like it or not, is going to change radically. The way we lives our lives, impossible as it seems, is going to change drastically. Kunstler lays out a very likely scenario that details these near-future changes. To pretend that we’ll be able to continue as-is is folly. Kunstler helps us mentally prepare for our new lives. rag & bone

Description
If you’ve shopped for ‘green’ clothes, you’ll know that finding quality that matches the price points can be difficult. Hand-stitched in the United States, Rag & Bone’s offerings are of amazing quality. Their commitment to environmental issues is solid, as is their fair-wage, local production stance. I can’t commend this company highly enough. (via www.arboretumapparel.com)

Flying Goat Coffee

Description
I have to admit I’m not a big coffee drinker. That said, there is one roaster who I do wholeheartedly support. Not just because their Espresso Ticino was recently rated the nation’s finest, but because their commitment to fair trade and sustainable business practice trumps that of any other U.S. coffee house. Sand County Almanac (Outdoor Essays & Reflections)
First to recommend
Description
Published way back in 1949, this is the book that tuned millions into conservationism. It’s a beautiful bit of nature writing that really is responsible for opening my eyes some years ago to the fact that conserving our home is an absolute imperative. (via www.earth-policy.org)

Safety Razors & Blades
First to recommend
Description
The only way to get a close shave AND be free of disposable razors. The safety razor has gone out of vogue, which is a shame as it’s more eco-friendly and it delivers a closer shave. Once you get the knack, there’s no going back to plastic, non-recyclable razor heads.
