Burning Man Must Haves. Trust Me. - a list by Yournewbestfriend
Options for This Page
About this list:
I went to Burning Man for my first time this year (2008) and it was an amazing week. I laughed, I cried, I drank, and I kept a running checklist of all of the things I absolutely MUST HAVE for next year. Which I really can't wait for. Anywho, heed my advice and make sure you have these things. Your playa experience will be super no matter what, but these things will make it comfortable, too.

Biodegradable Plates, Cups & Utensils
5 people recommended this item
Description
These are probably some of the most attractive biodegradable disposables (made from sugarcane). They are unbleached and FDA-approved food-safe. Safe for microwave and freezer, are oil-resistant and good for hot or cold foods.
They can be composted, torn up in pieces and added to your garden to compost, or cleaned (with no oil residue) and recycled with paper.
Also available on Amazon.
"StalkMarket products are made from Bagasse, the natural cellouse fibers that remain after sugarcane has been processed to remove all the liquid "juice" from the sugarcane stalk. Natural fibers such as these will biodegrade in the presence of heat, moisture, oxygen and microorganisms that feed on the fibers as part of their normal diets." (via Treehugger)

Amy's Light in Sodium Organic Chili
First to recommend
Description
For some reason chili is all that I wanted when eating at my camp. This is a really good choice for camping because it has lots of protein, flavor, and is low in sodium. Eating on the playa for a week means eating a lot of non perishable and sodium laden foods, so anytime you can get something that's tasty, non perishable, and low sodium, snatch it up! These come in packs of 12 so they'll be enough for you and your friends, and maybe even some random passer-bys that you feel like feeding.

Blue Diamond Almond Milk

Description
Here's a little secret. I have to restrain myself from buying Chocolate Almond Breeze when at the grocery store because I know that I will drink all of it in...24 hours. It's so amazingly delicious that I conciously have to tell myself, "No Emily. You need more in your system than almond milk today."
Aside from that, the original flavor is my favorite. I use it in cereal , smoothies, and drink it just like milk. Almond Milk is also great for camping because it's non perishable until you open it, and even after you have about 2 days to drink it (varies). Delicious. I don't know what I'd do without it.

Coleman 100 Quart Wheeled Xtreme Cooler
2 people recommended this item
Description
You'll need at least two of these for your camp. Maybe 3 or 4. Pack it with dry ice, and that way you'll be able to enjoy veggies, fruits, cheese, and meats while camping. Just because you're going to Burning Man doesn't mean you have to eat nonperishable food all week (contrary to what my friends told me). Dry Ice will last at least 3 days, and then you can supplement with ice from center camp.
Trust me, by Day 3 a roast beef sandwich was like a gift from the heavens. And a cold beer? Spoil yourself!

Rustic Sarong
2 people recommended this item
Description
I wore my sarong all week. No, it wasn't rustic. But it was grand. I wore it as a top, a dress, a skirt, and used it as a blanket when napping. It's a great thing to have - - and any boys should definitely bring one too. Something about the freedom to wear sarongs (aka skirts) is really enjoyable for men on the playa. So freeball and enjoy! They're so versatile and lightweight - it's all you want to wear when you're in the desert!

Glow Stick Bracelets
4 people recommended this item
Description
You have to have glowsticks and glow jewelry at Burning Man. It's fun, yes, but more importantly (maybe) it keeps you safe. If you walk around without any glow on you're destined to be hit by an art car or at least someone on a bike. Buy a ton of them so you can have a couple drinks and glow yourself. It's much more fun when you have way too much glow to handle.

CamelBak Hydration Packs
3 people recommended this item
Description
I wore a camelbak with more cargo space in it this year, and it kept me hydrated all day. So much that I didn't even have to remind myself to drink water. A camelbak is a great thing to have in the desert because they're so convenient that they make hydration seem like second nature. And they're really lightweight so you're not stuck carrying a water bottle around.
A simple camelbak with a large bladder, room for chapstick, and something to hook a cup onto is all you need. A must have!

Carabiner Mug
2 people recommended this item
Description
These are so awesome, especially for Burning Man. First, you need to have a cup EVERYWHERE you go, otherwise you won't get to enjoy all of the wonderfully free drinks and coffee. I recommend having a cup with a lid on it when you go out on journeys, but for my morning coffee run to Zombies camp I would have loved one of these. They are lightweight and clip on to your backpack, pants, shirts, or even bike for easy transport. And coffee is just so much more enjoyable when it's in a real mug.
These are also great if you bike ride to work because you can just clip it onto your bag and stop into the coffee shop for a break without using one of those wasteful cups!

Coleman Two-Burner Propane Stove
2 people recommended this item
Description
I used one of these all week at Burning Man to cook up some delicious meals of...well...canned soup. Okay so my culinary expertise didn't shine on the playa but next year it will. And I will definitely have one of these. They are really easy to use (just need a propane tank and a match) and before you know it you can be cooking eggs and veggie sausage for the camp for breakfast. And be everyone's favorite person.
Make sure it has a lid on it, as this one does. Otherwise it will be covered in dust by the time you pack up to leave!

Banana Boat Aloe After Sun Lotion
3 people recommended this item
Description
I love love love banana boat aloe lotion. It is my favorite lotion to use all year round. First, it's great for maintaining your summertime bronzing. Second, it smells delicious. And third, it's a fantastic moisturizer. I brought this to Burning Man and half of it was gone by the time we left. You need a big bottle of lotion with a pump nozzle for easy use - you apply so much so often it's annoying to have to open and close your lotion. Enjoy!
