Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking by Malcolm Gladwell

Description
I finished this on a train in Switzerland--it was an excellent traveling read. I like Gladwell's writing style and the way he explains things. This book really makes you think!

Paper Blanks Notebooks: Jali Walls Series
First to recommend
Description
A good notebook is an essential item for doing biz today and Paper Blanks notebooks are my new favorite way to keep track of my thoughts and all that I need to do. They are beautifully made, very high quality, and quite durable. Really nice, thick paper and very interesting cover art. As you can see, I chose one from the Jali Walls collection but they have tons of other great stuff available. Next one I get will be from the Book of Kells. Paper Blanks could spell real trouble for Moleskin.

Out of Control: The New Biology of Machines, Social Systems and the Economic World
First to recommend
Description
Kevin Kelly, a founding editor of Wired, wrote this seminal book 11 years ago and it still remains one of the most forward-looking and world-altering books I have ever read.
Kelly brilliantly explains the then leading edge thinking behind complexity science and applied adaptive systems theory using references to Borges, chameleons caught between mirrors, and group intelligence.
The core Big Idea: More is Different, not just more of the same. What he means there is that when you have lots and lots of things interacting, you tend to get unexpected- or emergent- behavior. This emergent behavior, Kelly argues, is the basis for life, civilization, and consciousness.
While many of his ideas and insights have popped up in watered down ways in the mainstream pop and biz press, as well as on the Net, if you really want to understand the origins of much applied systems theory w/out having to wade thru dense math, I recommend Out of Control.

Description
this bright plastic 'zooka' shoots a harmless ball of air. hilarious when aimed at the elaborately coiffed. no worrying about kiddie knocking down grandma's ming vase with a nerf dart, requires no batteries or other acoutrements that could be swallowed or lost, and could spark an interest in physics...i'm just sayin'.

Etymotic Earphones
17 people recommended this item
Description
These are truly awesome earphones. They effectively block out background sound w/out forcing you to blast out your eardrums. The sound quality is very clear w/surprisingly good bass for such tiny speakers (I listen to a lot of electronica w/pounding beats so good bass is essential for me). Handles more delicate classical music well too.
Also, they are super-comfortable and lightweight- ideal for endurofest rides and runus. The extralong cord is nice but can get tangled a bit too easily (via grenadefishing)

leather whip

Description
For those times in a CEO or manager's life when motivational speeches, coaching, and leading-by-example just won't cut it. Also, useful when you are feeling less aggressive but still in need of useful tools, use your whip like Indianna Jones to save the world (via grenadefishing)

Red Bull Energy Drink
First to recommend
18 people recommended this item
Description
OK- I am not sure if Red Bull is actually good, bad, or indifferent from a pure health perspective. But it sure does work. When I need to concentrate at work, having a Red Bull helps me to hyper-focus on the task at hand. A great tool to help grind thru long ppt's or other things that required extended focus.
I am less into Red Bull as something to drink during sports. When I am actually doing a sport, I can get my adrenaline going w/out the extra stimulants which I sort of find to be distracting.
That said, a Red Bull post-session is a great way to end a day of climbing, surfing, etc when you are tired but need a pick-me up, etc

Bono: In Conversation with Michka Assayas
First to recommend
2 people recommended this item
Description
This book is a series of conversations w/Bono, lead singer of U2 and one of the few celebrities who use their fame to improve the world. I love U2 but I read this book more as a case study in leadership, commitment, and contribution, not as a fan.
If you want to get a sense for how a highly charismatic leader built a global brand and is changing the world, I recommend you read this. Great for entrepreneurs, activists, and people who want to effectively engage the world. Good for fans too ;-)

Timbuk2 Bags - Classic Messenger
5 people recommended this item
Description
These bags are great: mine came w/a built-in sleeve for my mac, big main compartment for lots of stuff, and a bunch of smaller, often zippable, side and interior compartments. I can basically carry around my entire office in one of these.
The material is both cool looking and very durable. Overall, really well-designed and stylish. BUT the straps really suck- too thin, no pad, too easily folds over on itself. This is not a show-stopper but it is a problem that they need to address. (via rallymatt)
