Klima

First to recommend

Description

London-based French vocalist Angele David-Guillou has previously made appearances on recordings by Piano Magic and the duo Ginger Ale, but this eponymous debut delivers the powerful simplicity of her voice in full force. Klima's music frames that voice in swathes of electronics as well as more conventional instruments (predominantly electric guitar), calling upon the mixing and production talents of Laika's Guy Fixsen and Piano Magic's Jerome Tcherneyan respectively. Angele is also joined by Psapp's Gwen Cheeseman, who provides the strings on the album - it's quite the who's who of indietronica. Of all the tracks here, 'Neverending' is the most impressive piece of production, the swooping strings and distorted backing vocals are a clear venture into Bjork's territory with marching electronic beats directly referencing the Icelandic pop queen's 'Hunter'. 'Lady of The Lake' is similarly elaborate, the otherwise upbeat arrangement cloaked in a misty reverberation that darkens things up nicely. In fact, much of the album is sewn together from fragments of electronic instrumentation and grandiose strings, but it's the remarkably straight-forward 'Fluorescent Stars' that provides possibly the most instant, most memorable song on the album: it's a combination of bare electric guitar arpeggios and a wordless vocal hook that proves to be the most emotive moment here. Onobox - Yoko Ono

First to recommend

Description

A brilliant collection of early recordings by one of this centurys most inspiring and original artists. Through out I enjoyed how Yoko Ono crafts new textures and melodies from Blues, Jazz, Rock, Dance, Reggae, and so on. Onobox is a important music exploration, the music contained within historically is groundbreaking as it successfully bridges traditional asian voice and western contemporary music.

Dagmar Krause by Hanns Eisler

First to recommend

Description

I'm one of those music addicts that refuses to listen to Broadway Musicals written after 1979, yet I'm a fan of Broadway 'like' composers such as David Bowie, Kate Bush, Nina Hagen, and so on. At some point the music of Weill and Brecht and Eisler was introduced to me through the iconic voice of Dagmar Krause. "Tank Battles: Songs of Hanns Eisler" contains many of Eisler's strongest works, and I'm happy for the english versions contained in TB as the lyrics play a massive role in not only the understanding of Eisler's narratives, but also as a entrance into the vocal performance which Dagmar Krause gives so richly.

Out of Season ~ Rustin Man, Beth Gibbons

First to recommend

Description

Debut solo album from Portishead vocalist, in collaboration with Talk Talk man Paul Webb (alias Rustin Man). Eschewing Portishead's lush orchestrations for a sparse, bare production, this is a collection of quiet, acoustic folk and jazz balladry which showcases Gibbons's versatile voice. Features additional production and guitar work by her Portishead colleague Adrian Utley. Lee Harris & Simon Edwards of Talk Talk also contributed to the record. The album was mixed by Phill Brown who worked on Talk Talk's 'Spirit Of Eden'. Go Beat

Don Juan's Reckless Daughter ~ Joni Mitchell,

First to recommend

Description

The songs "Jericho" and "The Silky Veils Of Ardor" have become my favorite tracks from "Don Juan's Reckless Daughter". I was originally seduced by the sweeping sonic storytelling of "Paprika Plains", but now the orchestrated structure of it reminds me too much of those "concept albums" of the 70's.
