Gifted: Women of the World ~ Various Artists

First to recommend

Description

A well composed introduction to the expansive world of female voice featuring a stunning handful of artists who's craft (often so rich in classical training) pushes past conventional description.

Note:
A portion of the proceeds from album sales go to WITNESS, a group cofounded by Peter Gabriel that equips human rights advocates with modern technology such as video cameras to further their causes

Some Things Just Stick In Your Mind (Singles And Demos 1964 To 1967) ~ Vashti Bunyan

First to recommend

Description

"Some Things Just Stick In Your Mind" (Singles And Demos 1964 To 1967) is a time capsule from the 1960's--wait, no it's a time machine, no, it's a collection of singels (some previously unreleased), from Vashti Bunyan that has a power to envelop the present moment with the sound of the 1960--It's not the Beatles, and the Stones 60's but the acoustic folk, songwriter side of the 60's. It a sound that's been missed for a very long time.

Description
A 30-year exile of disillusionment came to an end in the early noughties for folk icon Vashti Bunyan with the re-release of her 1970 debut record 'Just Another Diamond Day', bringing her admiration from a modern generation of folk musicians. On the back of this new-found popularity comes 'Some Things Just Stick In Your Mind',--The first disc gathers together early single recordings (among them the Jagger/Richards-penned title track), while the second is the minimalist result of one hour's studio timein 1964, with only Bunyan's voice and guitar present.

Sur Les Traces de Black Eskimo ~ Les Georges Leningrad

First to recommend

Description

Les Georges Leningrad is not for everyone, but I don't care, sure it's on the difficult listing cannel, but so is the The Residents record (Eskimo) that inspired "Sur Les Traces de Black Eskimo". I've only seen Les Georges Leningrad twice, and after the first 10 minutes of (what the f*ck is this), I feel in love with them and wanted to run away and join their circus.

Music to Fall Asleep ~ Klimek

Description

Klimek's "Music to Fall Asleep" works for me, and yes the cover photo which brings to mind Jean Cocteau's "Orpheus" and Lewis Carroll's Alice in "Through the Looking Glass" is a pleasure beyond words. (via Amoeba Music)

Daisies - Album

First to recommend

Description

The cover image and the title "Daisies -- Original Soundtrack To The Groundbreaking Czech New Wave Classic" brings a smile to my face. I don't own this album and I've only seen it on line, but the description from Dusty Groove seems like something I'd like.

About this:
An amazing soundtrack to an amazing film -- a Czech new wave classic that's supported by sounds as dynamic as the images on the screen! There's a really playful feel to the whole thing -- much more so than other Finders Keepers reissues in recent years -- and the music jumps along in a mix of military moments, folkloric elements, jazzy bits, and some spare, simple melodies -- almost a bit like Nino Rota's best for Fellini, but a lot crazier overall! Instrumentation has some almost Moondog touches at the best points -- repetitive woodwind or piano bits, with some grittier, organic elements at the bottom -- and although much of the music is by the team of Jiri Suchy and Jiri Slitr, there's also other bits that crash into the mix too -- almost with a surprising, abrupt sort of quality. Titles include "Peach Tree Thieves", "Threes A Crowd", "Red Carpet", "Burning Ribbons", "Girlies Girlies", "Roses Red Roses Red", "Cuckoos", "Scissors", and "Beggars Banquet". (via Dusty Groove)

White Chalk ~ PJ Harvey

First to recommend

2 people recommended this item

Description

I missed out on the first half of PJ Harvey's carrier, you know--all that raw guitar, and emotion, and Nick Cave, and NYC, and leg licking, yeah I missed out on all that, sept for one wet make-out session featuring PJ Harvey as the soundtrack, ok maybe that's too much information, anyway I wanted to say something about "White Chalk". Ah, well... "White Chalk" may be my chance to join the cult of Harvey. "White Chalk" is classic in the way most Francois Hardy, Scott Walker and Nico recordings are classic, it's an intimate collection which seems to exist within it's own realm. I'm drawn to the music as it strokes the melancholic and romantic side of melody, but you see I'm one of those who is attracted to the sound of pianos generating introspective atmosphere, fog shrouded streets, nocturnes, and rainy day moods. ah, still more info than you need to know...
