Description
Whether you are vacationing at home or in a distant city, you might find the locally-created Green Map a great resource for exploring the place with a fresh perspective.
Green Maps are like a PR service for green living, natural and cultural resources, so instead of finding yourself at another mall, you’ll be cycling in a wonderful park or garden, entertained by authentic local theater or dining at a really good for you-good for the planet- cafe. Green Map System’s store offers diverse Green Maps, books and DVDs about this unique participatory movement. The website’s Maps section offers downloadable Green Maps and the stories behind them, contributed by Green Mapmakers from 50 countries. Think Global, Map Local!

Local Harvest
2 people recommended this item
Description
Everything’s in season in the summer, and buying from local farmers at a farmers market, shop/stand or CSAs (community supported agriculture, a kind of subscription to the farm with weekly deliveries, (see JustFood.org)) is one of the healthiest choices you can make.
Local produce is super-fresh and vitamin rich, some of the tastiest fruits, veggies and dairy products you’ll ever eat! You are benefiting the commons, too, as you are helping keep your own bioregion green and minimizing the impacts of shipping food, as well as keeping those small farms growing strong. Ask about organic, free range and other growing practices, and think about our connection to that which nourishes us as you slurp that juicy peach.

It’s cool inside! Save on your own power bill while getting cozy at the library, and expanding your mind with a good book, all without spending a dime. And you can even take it home with you! NYC’s main library at 5th Avenue and 42nd Street is gorgeous, with uplifting architectural details, rotating exhibits and monumental books, maps and more to enjoy onsite; at the branch across the street, check out travel books and dream up a great vacation.

Metro Card for NYC Subway

Description
Driving is not a freedom – it’s a responsibility – you must stay alert, stay sober, be on the defense, continually pay more for gas, parking, etc. Cars can be a drag in any season.
Don’t drive yourself to extinction, use your local public transport system. Its recent improvements and expansions are probably described online, so even if it was not convenient the last time you checked, it could be now. Bike to transit, park’n’ride lots and special promotions like those offered by NYC’s MTA take the stress out of getting around in congested areas and make getting there a delight. (via MTA of NYC)

eBay – Bicycles

Description
Cycling is healthy, fun, sexy, convenient, cheap, cool, non-polluting – and you always get a good seat and a great parking spot too!
I’m suggesting that you check EBay to explore options and prices, but to actually do your trying and buying from a local shop. If you are in NYC and have one that needs work, Time’s Up! offers free repair classes and great group rides that help newbies get used to riding on busy streets and introduce residents and tourists to the city’s special places, day and night.
