Extraordinary Deviation from the Mean - a list by hanahula

About this list:

If you cannot take time off from work this summer, take a vacation from one or two of your habitual modes of being. If you always go conservative, try something a little more colorful in your wardrobe. If you always use email, try writing a letter. If you always watch independent films, try going to a blockbuster. If you always read non-fiction, venture over to the mystery or science fiction aisle in the bookstore or your local library. You get the idea. Deviate to rejuvenate.

Barnes & Noble: The DailyCandy Lexicon, by Editors of

First to recommend

Description

The subtitle of this book is "Words That Don't Exist but Should"; translation: words that the Daily Candy editors have cleverly coined in their efforts to describe phenomena of modern life. For example, "guyatus": a hiatus from guys. Or "dressed to spill": a bit too much cleavage showing. Officially being released on July 8, Barnes & Noble is graciously accepting pre-orders now. This is a book that will stretch your imagination, make you laugh and maybe even inspire you to develop a few of your own new words. Buy a copy and pass it around to every word lover you know.

Description

A blood action movie based upon a series by novelist Mark Millar, this movie may not be the kind of flick you generally pay admission to see. But the visuals promise to be stunning, however much the dialogue may or may not be lacking in substance. Relax, enjoy and try to count how many tattoos you see . . .

Occupant Films: The Wackness - Directed by Jonathan Levine

First to recommend

Description

Starring an incredibly unlikely combination of characters Olivia Thirlby (best friend in "Juno), Josh Peck (of Nickolodeon's "Drake and Josh"), Ben Kingsley (of movies to numerous to mention) and Mary Kate Olsen (sister to Ashley and creative force behind "The Row"), and reaching into the not-too-distant past for inspiration (1994 to be exact), this film could indeed be merely wack. But it is funny wacky rather than sad wacky . . . and definitely worth an hour or so of your time.

Amazon: The Cactus Eaters by Dan White

First to recommend

Description

If you have ever thought about taking a long trek through relatively uncharted terrain or merely wondered about the sanity of those who do, this book will provide you with a laugh-out-loud account of one man's quest to conquer the Pacific Coast Trail (PCT). What he finds and what he loses along the way will provide you with great insight as well as numerous useful tips about hiking and those who hike. Even if you never get the urge to go out and buy yourself a backpack, this is a great read.

Disney/Pixar: WALL-E

First to recommend

Description

The animation in this movie is fabulous, but prepare yourself: this is not a simple or simplistic cartoon about artificial intelligence. Disney pulls some powerful velvet-gloved environmentalist punches throughout the film, starting with the title character. Wall-E's name is an acronym for "Waste Allocation Load Lifter - Earth Class". I won't give anything else away, except to say that there is adventure, romance and comedy all rolled up into this wonderful film. Best seen on the big screen.
