The Novelty of Nature - a list by Gamine

About this list:

I think we're seeing the first wave of eco-chic-- a period when consumers aren't quite sure what "eco-friendly" means. As a result, we're going to be inundated with how "green" products are through the novel use of natural materials even if they aren't made by eco-friendly means. In the second wave, we'll likely see more conventional items made of sustainable materials using cleaner methods. There's been a bit of this going on in indie fashion and other companies and I think it's driving the present trend.

For some reason I feel like going on safari. Maybe it's because these shoes blend in with the savannah so nicely.

Organic Fine Jersey Short Sleeve T

4 people recommended this item

Description

This shirt is made of 100% certified organic cotton BUT

1. Is the dying process equally green or does it utilize harmful chemicals?
2. What about the environmental impact of the *imported* cotton?

Is this product a part of the company's image-conscious brand management or a sign of commitment to a cleaner environment?

HOBO INTERNATIONAL Chandon Handbag

Description

Hobo International actually has several cork bags in its Spring collection, but this is one of the few that doesn't look really strange to me. I just don't think cork and gold leather piping go together.

Prairie Underground Prairie Hoodie 100% Organic Cotton At Beklina

First to recommend

Description

Another website describes this same item as "100% domestically produced organic cotton." Whether or not the cotton is domestic, at least this line is produced in the U.S. and the colors appear to be natural. I can't be sure about their dying process because it's hard to find information on such small indie fashion companies.

Linda Loudermilk Bella Dress (Deep Sea) - Women's

Description

This dress delivers on both parts of the term "eco-chic." I saw Linda Loudermilk featured on a program about the environment so I know that she used low impact dyes for this garment. It's also 100% organic cotton and made in the U.S.

Silky Pieced Scarf

First to recommend

Description

"Originally skirts, blouses and dresses, these silk scarves have a single pattern at one side and pieced patterns at the other. Made in the USA from recycled fabrics. Machine wash. Each one will be completely unique, created by hand from vintage fabrics. As a result, patterns will differ -ensuring that no two scarves will ever be the same!"

Unfortunately this is the only piece in the Spring collection that doesn't elicit a very unimpressed, "Meh," from me. If UO's so psyched about making clothes from discards they should have a stronger offering for Spring 2008.

Due to Melisa's patented production process, their factories produce almost no waste and their shoes are easily disassembled and recycled and smell like bubble gum. Yep. Bubble gum.
