New York City Essentials - a list by caro

About this list:

I've been living in NYC and working as a journalist for about six months now, and this is a list of things that I've found are especially helpful for city living. They won't unlock the secrets to Carrie Bradshaw glamour (talk about the most unrealistic depiction of Manhattan EVER!) but they're some pretty good survival tools.

I live here!

FreshDirect

Description

FreshDirect is a godsend for New Yorkers: grocery delivery at prices lower than the corner deli or supermarket. One of my New Year's resolutions was to actually cook food for myself rather than just ordering take-out all the time, and FreshDirect is helping with that in a big way. I don't have to worry about going to three or four different stores to find the food I need -- heck, I don't need to make the time to go to any! (via Allie)

IN:NYC Card from American Express

First to recommend

Description

Instead of racking up frequent flyer miles, using this credit card will earn you points that can be redeemed for gift certificates at really cool restaurants, bars, and cultural events throughout New York City. There are all kinds of "earn double points" promotions, discounts, and other fun things too--plus, the Web site gives a good overview of every participating establishment so that you can find worthwhile ways to spend points. AmEx makes Chicago and LA versions as well!

Equinox Fitness Clubs

3 people recommended this item

Description

A membership at Equinox is on the pricier end of Manhattan gyms (and pretty much any Manhattan gym is pricey) but it's well worth it. The facilities are impeccably clean, locker rooms are fully stocked with everything from shampoo to shaving cream, there's NEVER a line for the treadmills, a selection of a zillion fitness classes is available, and there are great spa services too.

Paper Magazine

Description

A must-read for anyone who lives in, wishes they lived in, or loves downtown Manhattan. Paper is a really well-written magazine that talks about what's going on all around the city (though there's a distinct focus on downtown). Restaurants, clubs, fashion, celebrities, and randomness...and it's NOT dumbed-down. But if you're not in NYC, this magazine is "universal" enough so that it won't make you feel left-out.

Lux Skinny Black Jeans from Urban Outfitters

Description

They don't look too good on the model in this picture, but these are my favorite skinny jeans ever. I live in NYC, where bootcut is now anathema, and a lot of the skinny jeans out there are just sooo uncomfortable. These, on the other hand, are super comfy and (I think) they look great. Highly recommended!

Bliss Sweet Orange & Spearmint Sugar Scrub

First to recommend

Description

It's currently out of stock right now (I'm keeping my fingers crossed!) but this is an absolute must for living in NYC, where you walk absolutely everywhere and your feet get hard as rocks. It's gentle, but with repeated use it'll keep your feet nice and soft. In the summer, use it every day!

Lamé Legging

Description

These are probably one of the most fun items of clothing I own. Great for pseudo-ironic wear, you know, paired with a tunic and spiky boots and a pair of aviators. Alternately, these are always good to have around for costume parties. You can turn them into '60s, '80s, or the future!

Tab Energy

6 people recommended this item

Description

aside from the fact that tab energy comes in a rocket hot pink can, the drink itself is a pretty little fairy pink - but tab energy is no girlie drink -- this stuff gives you some serious juice.

tab energy doesn't taste de-luscious, but i don't think there is ANY energy drink out there that actually tastes fabulous. since they all taste about the same, you gotta go with the one that offers the most -- for me, it's tab energy
