A Confederacy of Dunces

Description
I was standing on a crowded subway car reading this book and laughing out loud every few moments. A wage slave looked up at me with his pale face and implored, "Please! I must know the name of that book!" This book won a much-deserved Pulitzer prize.

Letters from a Nut

Description
Fake letters to corporations and their responses, edited by Jerry Seinfeld. Pee in your pants funny. Probably written by one of the Seinfeld show's writers, though attributed to Ted L. Nancy.

Conversations with My Agent

Description
A former writer on Cheers details development hell on a new series, interspersed with phone calls with his agent. Very funny. Too bad it's out of print.

Naked by David Sedaris

Description
Sedaris is at his best when he's describing his dysfunctional family. On a long road trip, I read this out loud to my husband. We were both crying, we were laughing so hard. It was dangerous for my husband to laugh that much while he was driving. Warning: Do not use while operating heavy equipment.

Pride and Prejudice

Description
Jane Austen is unsurpassed in her ability to write satire. My favorite comedy bit is Mr. Collins' love for Lizzie. When the world gets me down, I always come back to P&P. I've probably read it 50 times.

Description
Of course, there is "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty" and "The Catbird Seat." But THE FUNNIEST STORY EVER WRITTEN, and I do mean EVER, is called "More Alarms at Night." Read it sitting down because it will make you cry. It has to do with a man being psychologically tortured by his sons. After one son has scared the father half to death by shaking him awake and saying "Wake up, Buck, your time has come" - another one lies awake trying to think of the name Perth Amboy. Not being able to think of it is driving him crazy, so he goes into his father's room in the middle of the night and shakes him.
"Listen," I said. "Name some towns in New Jersey quick!" It must have been around three in the morning. Father got up, keeping the bed between him and me, and started to pull his trousers on. "Don't bother about dressing," I said. "Just name some towns in New Jersey." While he hastily pulled on his clothes--I remember he left his socks off and put his shoes on his bare feet--father began to name, in a shaky voice, various New Jersey cities. I can still see him reaching for his coat without taking his eyes off me. "Newark," he said, "Jersey City, Atlantic City, Elizabeth, Paterson, Passaic, Trenton, Jersey City, Trenton, Paterson--" "It has two names," I snapped. "Elizabeth and Paterson," he said.

Chick lit, 1778. Fannie Burney wrote this when she was 15 years old. A hilarious story, told in letters. The precursor to Jane Austen & Clueless.

Lardner was a humorist and a sportswriter - he covered the "Black Sox" scandal of 1919. This book is written as letters from a naive bush league baseball player. My favorite story in the collection is "Alibi Ike" about a player who makes up elaborate alibis for his errors.
