The New Vegan Cookbook: Innovative Vegetarian Recipes Free of Dairy, Eggs, and Cholesterol $18.95 : Chronicle Books
First to recommend
Description
There are a host of reasons to not eat meat or dairy, but some of the most compelling involve thinking about just how resource-intensive cattle farming and the like really are. Eating vegan has nothing to do with self-denial -- eating locally grown, fresh produce, grains, and sauces make for some of the most delicious, nourishing meals you can eat, with a substantially smaller "water footprint" than what we leave behind by eating animals and animal products. Whether or not you're a committed vegan, the recipes featured in The New Vegan Cookbook are adaptable enough to fit in just about anywhere in your diet.

Squeaky Green: The Method Guide To Detoxing Your Home
10 people recommended this item
Description
More than just a guide to the toxins that lurk in your domestic space -- whether in the form of Toaster's PVC chew-toy or the pesticide hiding in your toothpaste -- Squeaky Green abides by the "reuse" pillar of the three R's, suggesting alternate, less harmful uses of icky chemicals you already own. The book also contains a wealth of information about the underlying organic hazards that the chemicals were created to deal with, everything from dust bunnies to E. coli. Although it bears the Method brand, the book's focus is much broader than product placement, and the solutions offered here are affordable and accessible.

Essentially a handbook for bringing out your inner post-materialist, Secrets of Simplicity is less a how-to than an interactive guide, with plenty of exercises and space for marking your reactions and putting thoughts to paper. Treating everything from investments to weaving dreamcatchers, the book is a useful guide for navigating the small, insidious anxieties built into a consumerist society.

The Pleasures of Slow Food: Celebrating Authentic Traditions, Flavors, and Recipes $24.95 : Chronicle Books
First to recommend
Description
Slow food has less to do with time than with process, place, and community. It stands in opposition to fast food to the extent that its core belief is that locally grown and carefully harvested foods should be prepared and enjoyed among friends, and with a maximum attention to season and terroir. Susie Cushner's monumental, detailed photographs and recipes from major adherents the world over add up to a sense of nourishment that extends beyond the body, and into the social.

The homes featured here break down into four categories, based on building material: adobe; rammed earth; straw bale; and reinvented, recycled, and high-tech materials. Beyond the real-estate porn on offer here, the book also prefaces each chapter with a rundown of the history and uses of each material -- meaning that it's aesthetic and practical at once.

California Academy of Sciences: Architecture in Harmony with Nature $45.00 : Chronicle Books
First to recommend
Description
The California Academy of Sciences is one of the oldest museums of natural history in the US. If you live in San Francisco or have visited Golden Gate Park in recent months, you've seen the building's -- opposite the DeYoung Museum -- gradual transformation into a totally new environment. Paricularly notable has been the building's terraforming, with plants being installed on the roof. Partly institutional history and partly a document of ingenious green design and building techniques, this is a book with an eye to the future.
