Netflix

Updated Dec 19, 2007

18 people recommended this item

Description

Netflix is why store-based movie rental is going out of business. You choose from a huge database of movies, they send you the DVD, you watch it and return it when you're ready, then they send you the next movie in your queue.

The selection is large, the late fees do not exist, the convenience is great.

A subscription also makes a great last minute gift - you can select from subscriptions ranging from one month to a year and ranging from one to three movies at a time. This is a great gift for your parents who refuse to tell you what they want, your stay at home mom friend, your friend who just broke their leg skiing, or your boyfriend who loves horror movies. Or someone like me who watches movies on my laptop during my train commute.

Lärabar Bars

Updated Nov 25, 2007

Description

I like eating one of these before I head out for my brush with insanity known as the evening commute. It keeps me fed enough until I get home.

They are a bit strange in terms of texture - they are fruit, nuts and spices held together with dates. They are: natural, kosher, vegan, uncooked, and so on.

I like them.

Mon KEYS - Key caps

Updated Nov 17, 2007

18 people recommended this item

Description

I have a million keys between home keys and various lab keys. What better way to remember which key unlocks the conference room than by saying, oh yeah, it is the dead monkey. Or the key to the microscopy room is the upset monkey, or ... you get the idea.

The key to my apartment will always be the happy monkey.

Caveat: if you use a metal key ring, the kind where you rotate the keys on, it will rip these and they will eventually disintegrate. I'm sure they would have been fine if I had had a key ring that opened. (via Chicago Apartment Therapy)

Metro Card for NYC Subway

Updated Nov 7, 2007

2 people recommended this item

Description

Living in Philly and working in NY, I have a profound appreciation for the metrocard. We don't have this in Philly. You can get monthlies, weeklies, tokens or pay extra and use cash, but we don't have a metrocard equivalent and we have no ticket machines.

I have fantasies about Philly getting a metrocard-like system.

Bose Around-Ear Headphones

Updated Nov 7, 2007

1st to recommend

Description

I am not a fancy audio person.

I like these headphones because they block out a reasonable amount of sound and they don't hurt my ears. The sound quality, as far as I'm concerned, is good.

I know there are people who think that Bose is over rated. They may be right. But I like my headphones.

(my little sister bought these for me last year - she rocks) (via My sister)

This American Life

Updated Nov 7, 2007

1st to recommend

Description

The Chicago Public Radio show This American Life is available as a weekly free podcast. Or if you're craving more, you can download shows from iTunes.

I find that the format is perfect for listening to on the way to work. Each episode is just about an hour long and is composed of three stories which are in some way linked. While the program does suffer for a tad of the preciousness that is NPR, it is distinctly enjoyable and almost always thought provoking.

I'm a sucker for everything Google. Having an online calendar has really helped me to keep appointments, remember birthdays, and figure out what day of the week obscure holidays fall on. It works with gmail as well as other Google applications.

North Face Sweeper Backpack

Updated Nov 7, 2007

2 people recommended this item

Description

I gave up on my DJ bag style bag. I loved how it looked but hated the back pain that resulted from me carrying too much stuff.

I also love my new backpack. I fill it up with heavy things and put it on my back and it feels like there's almost nothing in it. It has a pocket for my laptop and this pouch that fits my umbrella perfectly.

I know that adults carrying backpacks look goofy, but you know what, you look pretty goofy with the back pain.

Apple iPod

I can fill it up with all sorts of music and listen to it on the train. With some decent earphones, I can't hear the screaming child, or the screaming cellphone, or the ... you get the idea. Then at work, I can plug it into that set of speakers and continue to rock the world.

Apple MacBook

Description

I'm writing this on my macbook. It travels with me to and from work and only feels like a small brick in my backpack. It works.

I can use it to watch DVDs on the train or catch up on all the email correspondence I've neglected for weeks.

I'm neither a mac nor a PC person. I like both of them for different reasons.

2008 At-a-Glance Weekly Professional Appointment Book

Updated Oct 25, 2007

1st to recommend

Description

I used these through college and graduate school to keep track of classes, assignments and appointments. They aren't beautiful, but they work quite well. They have adequate space to write out the assignment or appointment completely and are quite functional. They won't get shredded in your backpack or easily lost - they're essentially 8.5 x 11. They come in a couple of different non-exciting colours (black, red ... )

Etsy Seller: Bliss by Heather

Updated Jul 30, 2007

Description

I'm in the market for a new messenger/backpack these days. On the train, I'm surrounded by the practical black bag, the ugly ballistic nylon messenger and the falling apart briefcase. I want something that is bright, that is comfortable and that I'll enjoy having in the sea of ugly functionality.

Bliss by Heather is almost there. I just want a good padded strap so the weight of the books and stuff is distributed on my shoulder. The colours are great, the designs are great ...

Chrome Sputnik bag

Updated Dec 18, 2006

1st to recommend

Description

I have the black version of this. It is fairly spacious even when I have the removable laptop insert in. It fastens with sturdy plastic clips that open and close without too much effort. It has two smaller pockets in the front, one is mesh. On the sides are smaller pouches - I use one to hold a tiny umbrella. The shininess also means that it is pretty waterproof even on a lengthy walk home in the pouring rain. I've had people with regular bags and backpacks comment on this on the street.

The only downside is that the strap is not padded in any way, but this is easily remedied as the strap is removable and can be replaced with a better one.

One of a kind bags from multiple artists. They are a little bit spendy for those of us living on limited salary, but there are so many and from so many talented artists, that you'll have a tough time choosing your favorite. They may also inspire you to want to make your own.

The Douche Card

Updated Dec 22, 2006

12 people recommended this item

Description

We've all been in this situation: in a bar, at a meeting, in line at the cash register, on the elevator, on a date, and someone is being an idiot. Now you can let them know.

Give them the douche card. Much like a yellow or red card, it conveys its message succinctly, although in this case you might want to run after handing it out.

Weather Underground

Updated May 7, 2007

1st to recommend

2 people recommended this item

Description

This weather site is a bit messy in terms of advertisements flickering everywhere, but it provides you with the goods: accurate weather forecasts, radar, and an hour by hour outline of the forecast. It is this last feature that endears it to me most.

If you're planning on taking a run, you can check what time the rain is predicted to happen. If you want to go fly a kite, it lets you know what time the winds will be best.

In brief: design is a bit ugly, functionality is nice.

Oh yeah, they also show air quality and link to an allergy forecast as well.

Another membership that you can ask your parents or more distant relatives for as a birthday or Christmas gift. Along with roadside assistance when you break down, they will also come and help you when you lock your keys in the car.

AAA discounts are great at hotels and oddly enough when shopping for glasses (30% off at Pearle Vision and Lenscrafters), and a wide variety of other places. Take a look at their website for other discounts. (via James)
