Nintendo DS Lite Onyx Black

Description
I was dithering over getting this for someone and called up a friend of mine to ask him if it was a good gift for a guy. His immediate response was to revert to being about six and saying "I want one too!"
I guess I chose well. You see people on the subway with these all the time; they're a small handheld gaming system that is eminently portable and eminently distracting. There are hundreds of games available for them which makes them good for just about anyone.

Amazon Kindle Wireless Reading Device

Description
Now that Kindle is just a little bit less expensive, I think I need one. Or you need one. I have friends who have one. Why don't I have one yet? Oh heck, it's still a bit more than I can probably afford. But I don't care. It's cool. And I need it. Because, well, why wouldn't I?

Netflix

Description
Netflix is why store-based movie rental is going out of business. You choose from a huge database of movies, they send you the DVD, you watch it and return it when you're ready, then they send you the next movie in your queue.
The selection is large, the late fees do not exist, the convenience is great.
A subscription also makes a great last minute gift - you can select from subscriptions ranging from one month to a year and ranging from one to three movies at a time. This is a great gift for your parents who refuse to tell you what they want, your stay at home mom friend, your friend who just broke their leg skiing, or your boyfriend who loves horror movies. Or someone like me who watches movies on my laptop during my train commute.

Lärabar Bars

Description
I like eating one of these before I head out for my brush with insanity known as the evening commute. It keeps me fed enough until I get home.
They are a bit strange in terms of texture - they are fruit, nuts and spices held together with dates. They are: natural, kosher, vegan, uncooked, and so on.
I like them.

Metro Card for NYC Subway
2 people recommended this item
Description
Living in Philly and working in NY, I have a profound appreciation for the metrocard. We don't have this in Philly. You can get monthlies, weeklies, tokens or pay extra and use cash, but we don't have a metrocard equivalent and we have no ticket machines.
I have fantasies about Philly getting a metrocard-like system.

Bose Around-Ear Headphones

Description
I am not a fancy audio person.
I like these headphones because they block out a reasonable amount of sound and they don't hurt my ears. The sound quality, as far as I'm concerned, is good.
I know there are people who think that Bose is over rated. They may be right. But I like my headphones.

This American Life
First to recommend
Description
The Chicago Public Radio show This American Life is available as a weekly free podcast. Or if you're craving more, you can download shows from iTunes.
I find that the format is perfect for listening to on the way to work. Each episode is just about an hour long and is composed of three stories which are in some way linked. While the program does suffer for a tad of the preciousness that is NPR, it is distinctly enjoyable and almost always thought provoking.

Description
I'm a sucker for everything Google. Having an online calendar has really helped me to keep appointments, remember birthdays, and figure out what day of the week obscure holidays fall on. It works with gmail as well as other Google applications.
