This is Halloween - a list by delicious_knid

About this list:
To me Halloween about a lot more than dressing up in flammable costumes and gourging on little fun size candy bars. It is a very important holiday for me and the holloween season is about to begin...It would be hard for me to say exactly why all this means so much to me and some of it seems so unrelated...it's campy, it's macabre, it's serious, it's irreverant, it's blasphemous and deeply holy, it's ancient and it's commercial. Halloween is where I feel safe and happy and completely me.
Gothic Lamp Shade
First to recommend
Description
From the Victorian Trading Company comes this beautiful and ingenious way to convert an ordinary table or floor lamp into a chilling piece of parlor decor.
The black lace and fringe fabric cover slips over any standard lamp shade and is emblazoned with standard eerie imagery, including skulls and bats, delicately woven into the fabric of the cover. It is elegant and macabre and a perfect way to up the spook level of your otherwise bland suburban TV room.

Frankenstein - Mary Shelley - Cover by Dan Clowes
First to recommend
Description
this is a reissue of the classic text that is part of Penguin's Deluxe Classic Editions edited by Paul Buckley - all of the editions of various pieces of classic western literature feature cover artwork by a prominent cartoonist or graphic novelist.
This cover for Mary Shelley's Frankenstein was done by one of my personal heroes, Mr. Dan Clowes, which should be enough to recommend it to anyone. This is classic piece of horror literature...this is a classic piece of literature PERIOD and if one were to judge a book by its cover, which you shouldn' t you know but which i do anyway, one would certainly choose this beautiful edition with dust jacket designs by the amazing Dan Clowes. Click on the alternate views to see the full dust jacket design...
i know having this edition does not improve the value of the amazing story contained within its pages but goddamn if it doesn't make it look purdy on the shelf...

Gigantic Frankenstein Model Kit - Reissue
First to recommend
Description
Moebius is reissuing many of it's classic horror and monster model kits - including some of the classic Aurora kits! Woo Hoo!
This caught my eye because I've always had a soft spot for Frankie and what better way to show that love than to spend your time carefully painting and finishing his (extra) deformed little body. I love that this model is extra misproportioned...it makes him extra cute (as if he needed to be...)
Plus, for a limited time, you can buy the special Glo-Frankie edition!
I seriously want one of each...maybe I'll replace the lions that flank my driveway entrance with these cute little guys...
the lion's have been eating too many girl scouts and mail carriers anyway... (via Moebius Models)

Ouija Board Guitar
First to recommend
Description
I cannot track down anyway to buy this or a version of this amazing piece of functional furniture...it appears the artist that crafted it is a man named Nick Holcomb who is somehow associated with the Rhode Island School of Design. But it also appears that he designed it for Ten31 Productions, who to quote their own copy: "specializes in the highest quality hand-crafted living art installations for special events, weddings, public festivals, and corporate functions."
Basically, if you are having a pagan themed wedding or corporate event where you want a bunch of half people/half trees moving around in the background, they are your people. It is flippin' impressive and downright creepy in it's own right, and I encourage you to check out their website to see what I mean.
BUT - back to the guitar:
which is absolutely beautiful and boy oh boy do i wish there was a way to buy it...it is the perfect addition to your weekly seance.
we all know the spirits enjoy music and can be coaxed into your presence by a little live performance of some mississippi delta slide guitar. do you know a medium that can whip off a mean robert johnson or muddy waters impression? hell, maybe with the right person working the strings, you could even summon robert johnson or muddy waters!
i mean, the guitar slide doubles as the planchette! how frickin' cool is that?!
frickin' cool...
frickin' cool.

How to Care for Your Monster by Norman Bridwell
First to recommend
Description
This is a great little book from the man who also created Clifford the Big Red Dog. It offers very real and very helpful advice on how to care for mummies, vampires, "frankensteins" and werewolves...for instance, when caring for a werewolf, if he appears sluggish and sick to his stomach, Bridwell suggests it might be something he ate and recommends counting your friends.
My copy came from my mom, but you can still find it online, particularly though amazon, who appears to have several copies. If you are considering investing in a monster as a companion, invest in this handy little tome and learn how to take care of the unique requirements of monsters.

European Silver Vampira Pendant
First to recommend
Description
Available exclusively from the Victorian Trading Company, this sexy pendant is a great gift to grace the throat of the one you want to bite. Cast from an art deco heirloom, this seductive and sensual little vampiress is hand crafted in Europe from pure silver.
(and in case your wondering, the book that appears in the background, is a collection of poetry by Laura Redden Searing, who wrote under the pen name Howard Glyndon - here is an example of her melancholy verse:
"The snow is falling abroad,
Over meadow and moor;
Drifting silently, high and white,
O'er the sill of our cottage door.
It falls on a lonely grave
Lying away to the West,
Where a hero heart is mouldering away,--
The heart that loved me best!"
— Howard Glyndon (Laura Redden Searing), "The Snow In October", from The Idyls of Battle)

BLACK FRANKENSTEIN MOVIE POSTER
First to recommend
Description
I had to post this because it is seriously one of the goofiest horror film posters I've ever seen. From the amazing era of blaxploitation, this poster has absolutely nothing to do with Frankenstein, except for the name.
An attempt to cash in on the success of Blacula (which is an AWESOME movie...i don't care what you say) this movie was also known as Blackenstein and had the tagline: "To stop this mutha, takes one bad brutha."
If framed, this poster would be an excellent addition to a formal dining room or newborn's nursery.

Dearly Departed: True Lies In Song Unearthed From Lone Fir
First to recommend
Description
This is a benefit cd for the Lone Fir Cemetary in Portland, Oregon which is one of Portland's oldest cemetaries and a landmark for its beauty - both architectural and horticulturally. The cd includes 15 tracks by various local musicians including Adam Shearer & Adam Selzer, Al James, Amelia, Chris Robley & The Fear of Heights, Holcombe Waller, James Beaton, Jesse Emerson, Jim Brunberg, Leigh Marble, Matt Sheehy, Nick Jaina, Pete Krebs, Ritchie Young, Storm Large, The Taciturns.
Each song pays tribute to a particular colorful resident of Lone Fir, a list which includes some very notorious and sometimes unsavory citizens of Portland's early and often horrific history.
It really is a fantastic cd with songs about prostitutes, shanghaiing, thievery, drunkeness, suicide and axe-murderers...
In particular check out "Plastic Flowers" by James Beaton...amazing.
And it all goes to benefit the Friends of Lone Fir who keep the historical landmark and treasure clean and safe and beautiful for us and for any visitors to our city (not to mention the hundreds of permanent residents of this quiet park)... (via Friends of Lone Fir Cemetary)
