The Warmest Room in the House: How the Kitchen Became the Heart of the Twentieth-Century American Home
First to recommend
Description
Instead of a book about food, of which there are now so many, this one is about the place where we make and enjoy it - the kitchen. There's a reason why, when you have a dinner party, no one sits at the table, and everyone ends up standing around the kitchen.

The Little Saigon Cookbook: Vietnamese Cuisine and Culture in Southern California's Little Saigon

Description
The beauty of the "dining scene" in LA isn't the handful of "starred" restaurants fronted by celebrity chefs. Those are much better had in cities like Chicago, New York, and San Francisco. No, the beauty of the LA dining scene is really the patchwork of neighborhoods that, when taken from a food perspective, are really defined by ethnic cuisines. East LA is Mexican. Further East is Chinese. There are pockets of Japanese in downtown and West LA. For Vietnamese food, LA has Little Saigon in the Garden Grove and Westminster area. Ann Le has put together a cookbook that is based out of this region of LA.

The Way to Cook by Julia Child

Description
This was the first real cookbook from which I attempted to cook and bake in college. I might have to give it another go 'round now that I've honed my skills and probably won't burn an entire roast chicken.

The New Best Recipe: All-New Edition with 1

3 people recommended this item
Description
If you could only own one cookbook, this would be it. It's a comprehensive collection of basic, tried and true recipes that have been tested by the chefs at America's Test Kitchen. There's even a story at the beginning of each recipe that tells you how the recipe was tested, what mistakes were made and what they liked before coming up with the final recipe. What this means is that chances of you f*cking up your food are slim since other people already f*cked it up for you!
