marytofts :: Real Beetle Brooch with Spread Wings CZ Rhinestone Scarab

First to recommend

Description

This brooch is made from a real scarab beetle, cubic zirconia stones and gold brass. It appears to be very well made, and in a way is straight out of the Victorian era and it's love for taxidermic curiosities. A thing of beauty created from an actual creature.

It features spread wings and 2 rows of CZ stones;
1st row is across the neck and the 2nd row goes down its spine.

It measures about 1 1/2" by 1 1/2". (via etsy.com)

bugman58 :: Wild Beetle Combo in Solid Back Frame

First to recommend

Description

From the seller:

Here is a very nice grouping of three seperate species. All are facinating creatures, large, and in A1 condition.

The first specimen on the left in the Picture is a large Stag Beetle, scientific name Prosopocoilus giraffa giraffa, from from the Celebes Islands.

Next to it is the wonderful five horn Rhinoceros Beetle, scientific name, Eupatoris gracilicornis, from Thailand.

Finally on the far right we have the magnificent Stag Beetle, scientific name, Cyclommatus metallifer finae from Java.

All of the specimens are males. None of these Beetles feed as adults, and actually live about a week, sometimes even less. Basically long enough to find a mate. The Term "Stag Beetle" comes from the large pincher like mandibles that are shaped like antlers on most species. These Beetles are totally harmless. Males use these for fighting off rival males, and for holding on to females while reproducing. The Rhinoceros Beetle also uses it's horn-like projections on the head to fight off rival males. These gentle giants try to flip each other over, similar to some turtle species. Once the victor has flipped over his rival, he is free to mate with the female, usually near by, while the defeated male must take time to right himself.

I have mounted these fantastic Beetles in a black frame that measures 7.5 inches long by 5.5 inches wide, by 3 inches deep. The frame comes with it's own wall mount bracket ring. This item comes with data labels for each specimen. (via etsy.com)

bugman58 :: Two Pretty Morphos

First to recommend

Description

These are beautiful! The colors in the wings are amazing. I actually have a few specimens in my kitchen. It may seem insane, but when I was a kid I used to be afraid of butterflies. Yeah, I know. But I have a good reason. It's because I watched to many of those PBS specials where they got up right in their faces, and they looked like monsters to me. Well, what can I say.

These are two Morpho peleides from Costa Rica and Morpho didius from Peru. They are mounted in a 10-inch frame, that is 2-inches deep which may give you an idea of how large the butterflies are. (via etsy.com)

aminyitray :: Curiosity - Alligator Specimen

First to recommend

Description

I thought this was pretty cool, but I have an affinity for zoological specimens. It's the reason I was a biology student and an autopsy assistant professionally. Nature is just cool. When presented in an artitistic form or displayed as a curiosity, for me it's all the more appealing.

From the seller:

This antique glass box contains a taxidermied alligator head on a mauve satin brocade pillow. The box measures approximately 6" x 4.5" x 4.5". What a conversation piece!! (via etsy.com)

dsbrennan :: Curiosities - Square Greeting Card

First to recommend

Description

From the seller:

The Natural History Museum where I photographed this image is a veritable treasure trove. Obscure old bottles, birds in bell jars, skulls with springs! This small collection of curiosities was photographed through the viewfinder of a vintage Kodak Duaflex camera. The result definitely put me in a Halloween mood (one of my favorite holidays!)

Offered here is a square format greeting card, approximately 5"x5" which will come with a square envelope in a plastic sleeve. If you prefer a rectangular envelope, please let me know when checking out.

This photograph is part of my Natural History series. More can be found in my shop, and still more can be viewed on my blog - http://dsbrennan.blogspot.com

This photograph was taken by yours truly, courtesy of the Museum of Natural History and Planetarium, Roger Williams Park, Providence, RI. (via etsy.com)

Mutter Museum Historic Medical Photographs: College of Physicians of Philadelphia, Laura Lindgren, Gretchen Worden

First to recommend

Description

This is a book of photographs from exhibits in the Mutter Museum in Philladelphea, PA. I have always wanted to go there and check it out. It houses some of the most curious medical cases in history --- from the skeletons of giants to actual antique medical devices.

One of my best friends is from Phili, and has been to the museum on a few occaisions. She is one of the least sqeasmish people I know, and told me that she actually became light-headed at one of their exhibits. I won't say which one.

Product Description

The first book on the Mütter Museum contain artful images of the museum's fascinating exhibits shot by contemporary fine art photographers. Here, the focus is on the museum’s archive of rare historic photographs, most of which have never been seen by the public. Featured are poignant, aesthetically accomplished works ranging from Civil War photographs showing injury and recovery, to the ravages of diseases not yet conquered in the 19th century, to pathological anomalies, to psychological disorders. Many were taken by talented photographers between the 1860s and the 1940s as records for physicians to share among colleagues and to track patients’ conditions, and demonstrate various techniques used in medical photography including the daguerreotype, micrography, X ray, and traditional portrait-style photography. As visual documents of what humans endured in the face of limited medical knowledge, these extraordinary and haunting photographs demonstrate how far medicine has advanced. (via amazon.com)
