Happy Hollow : Cursive

Description

With each successive album, Tim Kasher gets more bitter, critical, biting and cynical. His lyrics are knife-edged and the music rolls behind them in dense, jangly movements that mesh perfectly. Great for working out a mad.

Putting the Days to Bed : The Long Winters

Description

Another one that, while not top of the list, is worth it if only for "Pushover" and "Fire Island, AK." Catchy and fun.

The bastard love child of The Replacements and Bruce Springsteen. If you haven't heard them, you should listen to them post haste.

Seriously. Just skip Chasing Cars. I'm sure we've all heard it more than enough. Skip right to Set Fire To The Third Bar or You Could Be Happy.

Cold Roses : Ryan Adams & the Cardinals

Description

I have a long-standing love for Ryan Adams during the Whiskeytown years. He wrote songs brimming with Westerberg-ian talent, music that country fans thought wasn't going to come around again. The solo years post-"Heartbreaker" weren't as kind, and my love of Adams waned significantly...until this album. It could probably have been pared down to a single disc, but "Let It Ride," "If I Am a Stranger" and "When Will You Come Back Home?" mark the return of the songwriter I loved.

Description

I've resisted the lure of Chan Marshall for a long time, but the songs on this album are murderously good. Great for late nights alone with your thoughts, or long solitary drives.

The Dust of Retreat : Margot and the Nuclear So-and-Sos

Description

I'm a big fan of orchestral pop music--strings, piano, horns, theremin, lay it on me--and Margot brings it all. They move between pop, rock and country with aplomb, the songs building and moving in waves as you listen. Beautiful.
