Childhood Books - a list by kryz

About this list:
Learning to read was so exciting. I loved reading as a kid. I put off sleeping to read instead. I remember a lot of the books I had to read in school, but some are fuzzy memories, so I'm trying to recollect the best ones!
Qualifications:
I always volunteered to read out loud in English class.

Dingoes at Dinnertime (Magic Tree House, No. 20): Mary Pope Osborne, Sal Murdocca
First to recommend
Description
The Magic Tree House series is quite the trip down memory lane. All the books in this series have titles that involve time, such as "Civil War on Sunday," "Revolutionary War on Wednesday," "Tigers at Twilight" and "Earthquake in the Early Morning." Clever.

Captain Underpants and the Perilous Plot of Professor Poopypants: Dav Pilkey
First to recommend
Description
Ah, yes, Captain Underpants, the comic series that all the boys wanted to read and all the girls were grossed out by. I don't even know why they had this in the library of my small, extremely strict private school (with uniforms). This book definitely has the most striking title of the series.

The Hallo-wiener: Dav Pilkey

Description
Another classic about a wiener dog who dresses as a hot dog for Halloween and gets made fun of. Personally I just like the name.

Bunnicula: A Rabbit-Tale of Mystery: Deborah Howe, James Howe, Alan Daniel
First to recommend
Description
Another personal favorite book from grade school- Bunnicula, a story about a vampire bunny. I hate bunnies and think they're mean so this was definitely for me.

Description
We always had a rotating cycle between all the girls in my class of the Betsy-Tacy books. They were, of course, THE books to read if you were a girl growing up.

Superfudge: Judy Blume
First to recommend
Description
Judy Blume was a pioneer of fun children's books. I loved the "Fudge" series, about the mischievous Farley Drexel, aka Fudge.

Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry: Mildred D. Taylor
First to recommend
Description
This was definitely my summer reading book one year in grade school. The title is quite intimidating, and the book is about a black family living in the deep South in the 1930's facing racism.
