Modest Needs is the Web 2.0 of charities. Everything it does is transparent, funds are given based on voting from a distributed community of judges, it runs with very low cost and it is founded on a simple, but effective idea:

Poverty often starts with a small tragedy. The unexpected medical bill, the car that breaks down so you can't get to work, etc. These types of events can start the spiral down the credit card debt hole that you can't get out of.

A well timed gift of a relatively small sum of money can prevent this slide. A well run and rewarding charity to give to. (via Kevin Kelly's Cool Tools)
