Having run through blizzards and over the tops of three-foot mounds of plowed snow, I well appreciate the value of having something more substantial than a sneaker to wear when the cold and wintry weather sets in. I will run no matter what, but these boots give me hope that I might actually be able to manage a graceful stride instead of just a sludge-like crawl during the winter months. Although their routines rocked my world, the Olympic gymnastics judges are seriously tough customers. So, congratulations to Nastia Liukin (silver) and Shawn Johnson (bronze) on their amazing grace, power and flexibility throughout their floor routines. For what it's worth, I would have awarded both of you gold medals. And, as far as the rest of the world is concerned, an Olympic medal is precious metal.

And, I am keeping my fingers crossed that you get to rock some Stella when you compete in 2010.

Stephanie Brown Trafton worshiped gymnast Mary Lou Retton as a young girl . . . but she did not follow in her idol's footsteps. And how lucky for Team USA that she did not. Yesterday she exceeded even her own expectations to become the first American woman since the 1932 Los Angeles Games to win a medal in the discus event. She also became the first American Track & Field athlete to win a gold medal in Beijing. Her throwing distance ? 64.74 meters (almost 213 feet) You are golden, girl.

Although the United States baseball team defeated China 9-1 in yesterday's game, they did not come away from the Wukesong Baseball Facility unscathed. U.S. outfielder Matthew LaPorta was struck in the head with a pitch, fortunately walking away with a mild concussion. This occurred after LaPorta collided with China's catcher, Wang Wei, as LaPorta approached home plate. Two of China's coaches and the pitcher who struck LaPorta were ejected from the game. The United States faces Chinese Taipei today, Tuesday, August 19, 2008. Let's hope this game is a little less ugly.

Kudos to Anna Tunnicliffe for winning the gold in the women's Laser Radial sailing competition, the first gold for an American woman in this event in 20 years !!! It was not at all smooth sailing, as the seas of Qingdao were rough and Tunnicliffe had to complete nearly a dozen races, solo, in order to achieve her medal.

Not that Michael Phelps needs any luck, but he has certainly come to represent the embodiment of luck . . . and one wonders whether he has somehow inherited the genes of a fish, so at home in the water is he. Winning eight gold medals in a single Olympiad, he has now set a new standard against which all future Olympians will be measured. Yet, it seems that the real joy for Phelps is more in the swimming than in the winning. And THAT is what is so glorious about his success.

Inspired by the cultures of South America, Asia and Eastern Europe, Alexander Girard originally created this set of dolls for himself. Faithfully reproduced by Vitra using Girard's drawings, these dolls are now available to give and collect. They remind me of my favorite ride at DisneyLand: "It's A Small World" . . . and the hope for harmony that the Olympic Games has tried to ignite within our world. Sappy? Maybe. But, that's me, hoping for world peace and an awesome finish to the XXIX Olympiad . . .
